How a life-threatening accident led Benjah to pursue music

Concordia University defensive end Benjamin Thom popularly known as Benjah dreamed of playing professional football.

However, a tragedy shattered those dreams just three months into his freshman year.

The night of Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, Thom drove back to campus with a close friend on the team, wide receiver John Randall “J.T.” Thomas, who stopped the car to reach in the backseat for something before he merged on to the highway.

As J.T. leaned back, his foot came slightly off the break pedal. The car slowly crept forward, but neither athlete noticed. They were in a rural area without streetlights.

Suddenly, a light to the left appeared and quickly grew in brightness — too quickly for them to recognize the vehicle speeding toward their car. They had drifted out on to the highway.

The last thing Thom remembered is an explosion-like sound before he awoke to another sound, helicopters. Paramedics arrived and rushed them to the hospital. They didn’t have long to surgically repair Thom’s ruptured spleen before it killed him.

After multiple surgeries, Thom survived. Until he started to recover, though, doctors kept quiet about J.T., who they were unable to save. The traumatic experience changed Thom’s life forever.

“When you hang out with death for a couple days, you see things differently,” he said. “Life is precious, but it’s also frail. Although our bodies are amazing, we’re still so fragile. It can all be gone in one second.”

Thom also suffered head trauma in the car wreck. Already with a concussion history from football, he quit the sport, giving up his dreams to play at the next level. Instead, he transferred to Full Sail University to pursue his other passion, music.

Without his life-threatening accident, Thom said he would not have become the artist and Grammy-nominated producer known to Christian hip hop as Benjah.

On Nov. 13, Benjah released his fourth studio album, Motives. During the album creation process, he showed a demo of the project to Collision Records CEO Adam Thomason, who Benjah said discipled him when they both worked for Reach Records in Memphis, Tennessee.

In his critique, Benjah said Thomason encouraged him to share his story more.

“My natural way of expressing lyrically is more poetically, playing with words, as opposed to telling my story,” Benjah said. “Usually I tell other people’s stories, what I feel or things like that. … But he encouraged me to open up more.”

Benjah did just that several times on Motives, and one of the results is his third verse on track No. 1, “Come Up” featuring Thi’sl.

Remember that night, so scary /
Saw them headlights never, hail Mary /
R.I.P. to my row dog, J.T. /
In the I.C.U., now I'm in a new season /
Crazy how it works out, God's plan /
It’s never been stopped not, by man /
Had a big dream trying to play in the league /
I got taken out so I’d be in this scene

Benjah quoted Proverbs 19:21 when thinking about how the accident impacted him.

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand,” he said.

Buy Motives on iTunes or Amazon, and listen to the album on DBliss Media.

ARTICLE: You Can't Change How You Feel, but You Can Change How You Act

I remember years ago when I was young in the ministry and a woman came to me for counseling. She had recently accepted Christ as her Savior, and while she was talking, it became clear to me that she was living with her boyfriend.

I was just waiting for her to finish talking so I could tell her that was wrong, but God stopped me. He spoke very clearly to my heart and said, "No, you're not going to do that. I will tell her at the right time, when she's ready to hear it."

This was a powerful lesson for me because it helped me understand that people have to be grounded in God long enough, and love Him enough, that they are willing to give up the things that are wrong for them. And a religious attitude that is judgmental and critical toward others can be worse than the issue we feel we need to "correct."

First Samuel 16:7 (NLT) says, "… The Lord doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

The truth is God cares most about what's going on in my heart — why I do what I do — more than anything else. And the best thing I can do is keep my focus on Him and make sure my heart is right with Him.

Understanding Your Inner Life and Your Outer Life

We have two lives — an inner life and an outer life. The inner life is what we think and feel and the attitude we choose to have. It's our soul, which is our mind, will and emotions. Our outer life is what we see on the outside — the way we look, what we have, what we do. Both are important, but God is more concerned with our inner life and why we do what we do. He is looking at our hearts.

As believers in Christ, we belong to God; His Spirit lives in us and works in us to make us more like Jesus. When the changes in our heart show in the way we live, we're living from the inside out. That's when others can see the righteousness, peace and joy that we have in Christ operating in our lives.

Romans 14:17 (AMPC) says, "(After all) the kingdom of God … is righteousness (that state which makes a person acceptable to God) and [heart] peace and joy in the Holy Spirit."

God wants us to enjoy our everyday lives, even the ordinary, sometimes mundane daily routines that we can become tired of doing. And a religious, judgmental attitude — like the one I had toward the woman who came to me for counseling — only steals our joy and peace.

Going Through the Process

We have to learn how to live this way, and the first thing God wants to change in us is the way we think. He wants us to learn to think the way He thinks.

Romans 12:2 says we will know "what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God" when we've been "transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind" (AMPC).

Transformation takes time and is a process that happens gradually. God is still working in my life to transform me into His image, but I know I've made progress because I recognize more quickly now when I have "stinkin' thinkin'."

I can feel it inside … something isn't right and I've lost my peace and joy. That's when I need to stop and think about what I'm thinking about and what I'm talking about. I've gotten to the point where I was in the middle of a conversation and God brought conviction to my heart because I was saying something I shouldn't. So I stopped myself, apologized and said, "God just corrected me. I shouldn't be talking about this."

The way we think and speak determines our reality. If we want to live for God — with righteousness, peace and joy — we need to adjust our attitude when it's not good. I know there are times when we want to say, "Well, I can't help the way I feel." But we can help the way we think and talk, and we can choose our attitude.

Feelings are fickle and most people live by the way they feel too much of the time. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves: I can't always help how I feel, but I don't have to act according to my feelings. God created us with a free will, and we can choose to do what's right as we trust Him for the grace and strength to do it. We may not be able to choose how we feel all the time, but we can decide not to let our feelings determine how we will live our lives.

This is the key to overcoming the things that steal our joy in everyday life, like a critical, judgmental attitude. I want to encourage you to make a determined decision to live for God and make it your number one priority to have a right heart with Him. Then, even when your circumstances aren't joyful and peaceful, you can have joy and peace because they are in your heart. When you have life in Christ, it's so wonderful to live from the inside out!

NEWS: Consumed By Fire Proves to be a Force to be Reckoned With Through New EP and Hit Single "Lean On Me" lands in top 25 on national audience chart

Last week, Southern pop/rockers Consumed By Fire debuted their first EP Lean On Me with Inpop Records and with the success of the title-track, they are proving to be a force to be reckoned with.

"Lean On Me" was recently added to radio and has already landed within the top 25 on the National Audience Chart. Watch the official lyric video here.

The hit single was inspired by the brother trio's involvement with ChildFund International, an organization that aims to help deprived, excluded and vulnerable children have the capacity to improve their lives and the opportunity to become to young adults, parents and leaders who bring lasting and positive change in their communities.

"With all the ministry trips we have taken, we have seen the struggles that our brothers and sisters in the faith go through both in Africa and in our own neighborhoods," explains Jordan. "The Apostle Paul calls us into action in Galatians by saying: 'carry each other's burdens, and in this way we fulfill the law of Christ'. So because of this, we can't just dismiss the issues because they "aren't happening here or to me." We are to be the hands and feet of Jesus - so we should all make this our anthem and sing out with compassion, 'When you don't have a home - you can lean on me.'

It is this message that Josh, Jordan and Caleb Ward are extending to others this Christmas. On November 28 in Covington, OH, Consumed By Fire will embark on its family-friendly Christmas tour that will be free of charge for concertgoers and will give people the opportunity to sponsor a child through ChildFund. For every child sponsored, the recipient will receive a gift from the band in return filled with over $200 of merchandise and goods.

"We know finances are tight around Christmas for everyone and we want to give families something to do together that doesn't break the bank," explains Jordan. "My brothers and I are very blessed to live the life we lead, so if we can help others this Christmas, whether it's helping grow their family with a child through ChildFund or taking their minds off of the pressures of life for a little while through a concert; if families leave changed and walk away with a new joy they didn't have before, then we have done what we set out to do."

The EP includes four songs that will also be featured on their forthcoming full-length album, tentatively titled Giving Over that is set to release in spring of 2016.

VIDEO: LaToria – I Need More (Soul Cry)

Emerging from Dallas, Texas, up and coming Christian emcee, LaToria announces the release of her latest music video for the single I Need More – Soul Cry, the fourth single from her project The Long Walk Vol. 1. The project is a free download on Noistrade.com and is also available to purchase on iTunes, Amazon and other digital outlets.

I Need More – Soul Cry, is a song that acknowledges the desperation of the human soul. Highlighting the idea that everyone is ultimately looking for fulfillment, yet in a broken world, the only one that can truly fulfill is God alone.

“It was on my heart to offer up something heartfelt and real during the holiday season, something that spoke to the soul,” LaToria says. “At this time of year, there is lots of joy and excitement for most people. However, there are those who have a hard time getting through the fall season and may battle with sadness, emptiness and even depression. My hope is that people who fall into both categories will come across this video and song and realize that whether they are joyful or sad in this season, God is our only true source of fulfilment and he longs for us to seek deep, meaningful relationship with him.”

Like her last couple of music videos, this one was also shot and directed by Eshon Burgundy of Good Look Films on location at The Beltline in Atlanta, GA. The artistic, visual, aim was to capture the contrast of beauty yet brokenness that exists in the world we live in.

Be sure to check out this new video along with some behind the scenes footage found on her YouTube page.
