Iraq troops in 'final assault' on Islamic State in Falluja

Images shows the Iraqi army using heavy artillery on the ground, and being assisted by US jets from the air
The Iraqi army is facing fierce resistance and counter-attacks as it attempts to storm Falluja, a bastion of so-called Islamic State (IS).

The army's dawn offensive came a week after it began efforts to retake the city, just 30 miles (50km) west of Baghdad and held by IS since 2014.

An estimated 50,000 civilians are trapped inside, with only a few hundred families escaping so far.

Meanwhile IS militants launched a wave of bombings in and around Baghdad.

The attacks in the Iraqi capital killed at least 21 people.

The commander of the army operation in Falluja, Lt Gen Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, said: "The counter-terrorism troops along with other armed forces and Anbar [province] police have started pushing into the city. Violent clashes took place on the outskirts."

The Iraqi air force and international coalition jets carried out strikes in support of ground troops.

IS is thought to have about 1,200 fighters, the majority from the city itself.

The BBC's Jim Muir in Baghdad says government forces have taken over two townships on the southern fringes of Falluja, but on other fronts they are some way from the edge of the city itself.

The impression is that the army is trying to close a ring of steel around the city, he says.

Militia leaders taking part have said there is likely to be a pause before the assault on the city centre begins so, to allow more civilians to escape.

There is alarm over conditions faced by civilians, with reports of people starving to death and of being killed for refusing to fight for IS.

The Iraqi military has urged those remaining to either leave the city or stay indoors, though IS is preventing civilians from fleeing.

Falluja fell to IS in January 2014, a key moment in the jihadist group's rise that saw it declare a caliphate across swathes of Iraq and Syria.

Along with Mosul, it is one of two major cities held by IS in Iraq.

Meanwhile three districts of Baghdad have been targeted in attacks.
  • In the worst incident, a car bomb detonated at an army checkpoint in the mainly Shia area of Shaab, killing at least 11 people.
  • Another suicide attacker, on a motorbike, targeted Sadr City, a Shia area of Baghdad, killing three people
  • A suicide bomber struck a market in Tarmiya, a town 50km (30 miles) north of Baghdad, killing at least seven
All three bombings have been claimed by IS in an online statement.

IS frequently targets Shia Muslims, whom the extremist Sunni militant group regards as apostates.

The attacks may also be an attempt to deflect attention from the operation in Falluja.

Alan Pulido: Freed Mexico footballer fought kidnapper

International footballer Alan Pulido, who has been rescued after being abducted in Mexico, fought one of his kidnappers and used his phone to call police, officials have revealed.

Pulido, who plays for the Greek club, Olympiakos, cut his wrist when he punched a glass pane on a door as he tried to escape before police arrived.

Pulido, 25, was abducted at gunpoint on Saturday night in his home town of Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas state.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested.

Officials say the man had confessed to belonging to a local criminal gang. Police are searching for another three men believed to have been involved in the kidnapping.

State prosecutor Ismael Quintanilla said the masked gang had taken Pulido to a house in Ciudad Victoria where he eventually found himself alone with one of his abductors.

"They traded blows. He takes it [the phone] and calls [emergency number] 066. It all happened very quickly," Mr Quintanilla told Imagen radio.

An official report of the calls Pulido made to the emergency operator, obtained by the Associated Press, revealed that he threatened and beat the kidnapper while on the phone, demanding to be told where they were.

In one of the calls, Pulido said police were outside and starting to shoot so he described what he was wearing to avoid being mistaken for a kidnapper.

Ransom demand

Pulido had been abducted when his car was surrounded by several vehicles as he was leaving a party with his girlfriend on Saturday night.

Masked men whisked him away, leaving his girlfriend unharmed.

Pulido's family received a phone call on Sunday demanding a ransom payment, Mr Quintanilla told reporters. No ransom was paid.

Pulido, with one of his hands bandaged, told reporters early on Monday: "[I am] very well, thank God."

Tamaulipas is one of Mexico's most violent states, and Mexico recently deployed more security forces to tackle cartels operating in the area.

The country has one of the world's highest kidnapping rates, with government figures saying some 1,000 people are abducted every year.

Pulido joined Olympiakos last July and finished the season with six goals in 15 games.

He was part of Mexico's squad at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but was not called up for the upcoming Copa America tournament.

Messi to appear in court June 2

Lionel Messi is expected to appear in court on June 2, to prove his innocence against tax fraud charges.

The Barcelona forward and his father, Jorge, have been charged with three counts of tax fraud up to €4.1million.

Spanish agency, EFE, has now confirmed that Messi will testify next week.

The player was set to avoid a trial, on the grounds that his father handled his tax payments.

But a state attorney decided to overrule the advice of prosecutors and ordered both of them to appear. This means Argentina will have their captain in court, three days before their Copa America opener against Chile on June 6.

Hay Festival: Casting the next James Bond 'not a democracy'

Sam Mendes was speaking on the opening weekend of the Hay Festival(CHRIS ATHANASIOU)

Casting the next James Bond is "not a democracy", the director Sam Mendes has said at the Hay Festival.

Mendes was speaking to an audience at the annual literary event in Hay-on-Wye, Powys, on Saturday.

He has directed the last two Bond films starring Daniel Craig.

Mendes said that, despite media speculation about Craig's successor, the film's producer would ultimately choose the next 007.

He said: "There's this constant debate in the press about who's going to be the next Bond.

"The truth is, here's the headline: It's not a democracy.

"It's not the X-factor, it's not the EU referendum, it's not a public vote. Barbara Broccoli chooses who is going to be the next Bond, end of story."

He has previously confirmed that he would not be returning to the Bond franchise, after directing Skyfall and Spectre.

Daniel Craig has reportedly been linked to other roles that rule him out of returning to play the MI6 agent.

Mendes was speaking on the opening weekend of the Hay Festival.

Broadchurch actor Olivia Colman and Sir Tom Jones are among others expected at the event, which runs until 5 June.

Lewis Hamilton thanks Nico Rosberg for being a gentleman in Monaco

Lewis Hamilton won the race after starting from third on the grid, repeating his 2008 victory in Monaco

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton thanked team-mate Nico Rosberg 'for being a gentleman' and letting him through to help him win the Monaco Grand Prix.

Rosberg struggled for pace early on and was told by Mercedes to allow Hamilton into second behind Daniel Ricciardo.

A botched pit stop by Red Bull then enabled Hamilton to take a first win of 2016 and cut the drivers' title deficit to Rosberg to 24 points.

"I didn't expect the points to shift in the way they have," said Hamilton.

Rosberg said: "The feeling I had in the car was more painful [than having to let Hamilton by].

"It was very painful of course but easy to decide to do that."

There is an agreement between the Mercedes team and the drivers that if one of them is off the pace and affecting the other's chance of a win, then he will let him by.

Hamilton won his third world title last year but went into Sunday's race 43 points behind championship leader Rosberg, who started 2016 with four straight victories.

Hamilton, who had suffered repeated technical problems in the first five races, said: "I'm just focused on enjoying the moment.

"But the past five races have shown anything is possible. I'm conscious mistakes are still being made and we really need to pull together."

He added: "A swing goes both ways."
Doing it the hard way

Hamilton had started third after a fuel-pressure problem had affected his qualifying session.

"In the past, I would have been annoyed all night and denied myself any enjoyment in the other great things here," he said.

"But I went out with some friends, had a beer and thought: 'Let's see what tomorrow brings.'"

Under instruction from the Mercedes team, Nico Rosberg allowed Lewis Hamilton to pass him on lap 18
He added: "I came here today thinking I've just got to go and do it. It's not just going to happen. No-one's going to give it to me. The rain definitely opened a window of opportunity. Once I got past it was hammer time."

Rosberg said he did not understand why he was lacking so much pace in the wet opening part of the race.

Ricciardo pulled out a 13.1-second lead in seven laps before Rosberg let Hamilton through and the Briton then pulled out 10 seconds in five laps once he was into second place.

Rosberg said: "It was pretty simple - I wasn't going to be able to fight for the win. They gave me a warning to up my pace and I couldn't so it was logical and fully understandable."

He said he would look into the data to see if he could understand what had gone wrong.

Andy Murray reaches French Open quarter-finals with win over John Isner

The match was held up for an hour by rain

Britain's Andy Murray beat American John Isner in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open.

The world number two saved three set points in a 16-minute first-set tie-break and was leading 7-6 (11-9) 2-1 when play was stopped because of rain.

Murray, 29, outclassed 15th seed Isner after the break to seal a 7-6 (11-9) 6-4 6-3 win in two hours and 40 minutes.

The Scot faces France's ninth seed Richard Gasquet, who beat fifth seed Kei Nishikori, in the last eight.

As it happened: How Murray beat Isner

Murray, who needed five sets to win his first two matches in France, followed up his emphatic third-round win over Ivo Karlovic with another solid display against a big-serving opponent.

The Briton also held his own serve throughout - saving five break points, including three with aces - and finished the match with another ace to maintain his 100% record against Isner.

A key moment came in the first set tie-break when Murray saved a set point on Isner's serve by firing a backhand down the line past the advancing American.

Murray saved two more before taking the first set and never looked back as he secured his place in the last eight.

With more rain expected he will be pleased to have finished the match on Sunday to ensure he has a day off on Monday.

"It was a very important tie-break to win. I got lucky on his first set point when I guessed right on a short forehand," said Murray, who has reached the quarter-finals at 19 of the last 20 Grand Slam events he has contested.

"I managed to save more set points and it was a bit more comfortable after that."

On the effect of the hour-long rain delay, he added: "It is not easy when you're playing and you get stopped at fairly important moments because of the weather. You can't control it and it's easy to get frustrated.

"When you're on court you have to try and fight for every single point. But it affects the way the court plays and how you have to play."

How Murray has reached the last eight First round: beat Radek Stepanek 3-6 3-6 6-0 6-3 7-5
Second round: beat Mathias Bourgue 6-2 2-6 4-6 6-2 6-3
Third round: beat Ivo Karlovic 6-1 6-4 7-6 (7-3)
Fourth round: beat 15th-seed John Isner 7-6 (11-9) 6-4 6-3

Selected others: -9 Dufner, Kuchar, Campbell; -5 Z Johnson, Snedeker (all US); -3 Schwartzel (SA); -1 Singh (Fij)

World number two Jordan Spieth scored a final round 65 to win the Colonial National Invitational by three shots.

The American made six birdies to finish on 17-under-par, ahead of Harris English in second, while Ryan Palmer and Webb Simpson ended tied-third.

Victory was 22-year-old Spieth's eighth PGA Tour triumph and the first in his home state of Texas.

"That is a tough hump to get over. To win in front of my home fans, what a great week," said Spieth.

Leading by one shot overnight, Spieth levelled through the first nine, before making six birdies on the back nine.

Spieth, who is from Dallas just 33 miles away from the course, is the youngest eight-time winner in 86 years since Horton Smith.

He is also the second youngest eight-time winner in PGA history.

"Victory means a lot and the crowds were fantastic. It was a really cool atmosphere to play for. I stayed patient and the birdies came in streaks."

The top three players in the world, Jason Day, Spieth and Rory McIlroy, go into the Memorial tournament on Thursday having won their last events.

Donald Trump: Migrants treated better than US military veterans

Trump says undocumented immigrants are treated better than veterans

Illegal immigrants in the US often get better care than the nation's military veterans, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said.

"We're not going to allow that to happen any longer," he told a bikers' rally in Washington DC.

Mr Trump did not provide any evidence for his assertion.

Mr Trump said Sen McCain was only considered a hero because he was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.

He then added: "I like people who weren't captured."

Since then Mr Trump, who never served in the military, has tried to repair the damage by frequently honouring veterans at his rallies and holding fundraising events for them.

His latest comments came at the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally on Sunday, which was dedicated to remembering POWs and those missing in action.

Despite previous criticism, many in the crowd cheered Mr Trump.

"What I like about Trump is that he is one of us. He's not a politician," 52-year-old Louis Naymik was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency.

Mr Trump - who has made controversial comments on a number of issues - was speaking ahead of the 7 June California primary.

He is running unopposed in California after his Republican rivals pulled out and he reached the number of delegates needed to secure the nomination. It has yet to be formalised.

The Associated Press says Congress and many states have written an assortment of laws and policies designed to restrict government services to people in the country illegally.

Democracy Day: Buhari Says First Year Is Year Of Triumph, Consolidation

To commemorate Democracy Day, Nigeria’s number one citizen, President Muhhamudu Buhari has described his first year in office as a year of triumph, consolidation, pains and achievements.

As he spoke about a pot pourri of events, President Buhari affirmed his administration’s belief in democracy as the form of government that best assures the active participation and actual benefit of the people.

The President said that despite the many years of hardship and disappointment, Nigerians have proved inherently good, industrious, tolerant, patient and generous.

He went on to speak about promises made during electioneering campaigns to tackle problems bothering on security, corruption and the economy, challenges faced on assuming office and gains made thereafter.

He spoke about efforts being made to clean up the Niger Delta region, revive the economy, rid the Niger Delta of vandals and militants as well as curbing corrupt practices.

In all these, President Buhari acknowledged that those who are anti-government and anti-people would resist these changes.

He realizes that these individuals or group of individuals would sow divisions, sponsor vile criticisms and incite the public.

All these, the President promised, will not work, as his administration is committed to addressing these issues that have stagnated the nation’s growth.

Policy Measures

President Buhari also said that nobody should take the measures put in place by his administration as experimental in nature.

The President said that he knows that there are some unscrupulous people intent on making sure that these plans do not come to fruition, but that his administration remains dogged in ensuring that things work as planned.

“The policy measures and actions taken so far are not to be seen as some experiment in governance…

“The economic misfortune we are experiencing in the shape of very low oil prices has provided us with an opportunity to restructure our economy and diversify. We are in the process of promoting agriculture, livestocks, exploiting our solid mineral resources and expanding our industrial and manufacturing base.

“That way, we will import less and make the social investments necessary to allow us to produce a large and skilled workforce.

“Central Bank of Nigeria will offer more fiscal incentives for business that prove capable of manufacturing products that are internationally competitive. We remain committed to reforming the regulatory framework, for investors by improving the ease of doing business in Nigeria,” he said.

Food Sufficiency

In the meantime, the President is also assuring Nigerians that efforts have been made to develop the agriculture sector.

President Buhari says that it has put efforts in place to ensure that Nigeria becomes food sufficient.

“The first steps along the path of self-sufficiency in rice, wheat and sugar – big users of our scarce foreign exchange – have been taken.

“The Labour Intensive Farming Enterprise will boost the economy and ensure inclusive growth in long neglected communities. Special intervention funds through the Bank of Agriculture will provide targeted support. Concerns remain about rising cost of foods such as maize, rice, millet, beans and gari.

“Farmers tell me that they are worried about the cost of fertilizers, pesticides and the absence of extension services. The federal and state governments are on the same page in tackling these hurdles in our efforts at increased food production and ultimately food security.”

SURPRISED BY CHANGE... THE 9 BIG QUESTIONS NIGERIANS ARE ASKING ONE YEAR INTO THE GOVERNMENT OF PRESIDENT BUHARI

This paper is a sincere interpretation of the Nigerian experience in the last one year under the APC led government. After one year, these big questions have emerged from almost every Nigerian.

1) What is Change?

What is the definition of CHANGE in respect to the APC agenda:

a) Was it change for change sake or a concrete, decisive and successful departure from the failing status quo?

b) Was it just the change from PDP to APC, influenced by religio-ethnic and regional affiliations?

c) Was it the punishment by ejection of a stubborn god-son former president by a powerful and influential god-father?

2) Were they prepared for Leadership? Or Did they Understand the Demands of Leading Nigeria

If yes

1) Why is there so much confusion and disarray in system since they came in?

2) Why has the overall policy direction still remain the same as previous administrations?

3) Why is the naira weakening and still in a free fall?

4) Why were they so much confusion about the budget, that warranted the use of ready-made budget?

5) Why do we have the prolong problem of fuel scarcity?

6) Are they surprised by implications of the global fall in oil price? Because they don’t seems to be on top of it.

7) Why the resurgence of insurgence in the oil producing Niger-Delta?

8) Why the menace of Fulani Herdsmen?

9) Why the issue of Shitte in Kano?

10) Why the resurgence of Biafra agitations?

11) Did they understand that Nigerians expected positive results and not excuses?

3) What are the benefits or successes of the current Anti-Corruption War?

President Muhammadu Buhari at the Anti-Corruption Summit in London

a) Is the war on corruption a sincere one or only a camouflage or useful distraction for administrative and systemic weakness of the government?

b) How many corrupt public officers that were indicted of corruption have been successfully tried and sentenced one year after. Nigerians expected to see many ex-governors, ministers, and public office holders behind bars, what is the government waiting for?

4) Did they have a Plan?

If yes

a) Why do they look surprised by the state of things in the Nation and the world over?

b) Did they foresee and anticipate what is plaguing the nation, thus making plans to handle the problems?

5) Do they have a consciousness of time or a sense of urgency?

If yes

a) Why did take so long to appoint ministers?

b) Why did it take so long to pass the budget?

c) Why is it taking so long to solve the fuel crisis?

d) Why is it taking so long to rescue the naira?

e) And so on

Or is the CHANGE agenda being affected by “Nigerian time”

6) Is the first instinct of this government to cause more pain before easing it?

Fuel scarcity
If no

a) Why was it that before the ministry of power could even begin addressing the power problem in Nigeria, they increased power tariffs and introduced estimated bills?

b) Why was it that before the minster of petroleum could even bring reform into the sector, they had to be fuel scarcity?

c) Why did the government ban the use of gallons to buy fuel? Was that the only way curb fuel black marketers? It only escalates the problem.

d) Why is that before the fuel scarcity could be solved the government has increased fuel price?

e) Why is that before they could help our economy and currency, they had create forex difficulty that has hurt many Nigerians and their businesses?

f) Why is that to solve our cash problems, the government had to borrow?

g) Are we being punished for bringing in Change or are we being punished by Change itself? So What and Who is Change?

I understand that change does not come without some pain, but change must not also come with a greater degree of pain that it becomes unbearable for survival. If all Nigerians die because of change, what is the good of the change? Who will enjoy it?

The member of National assembly in Kaduna accused the governor Nasir El Rufai for deliberately punishing his people by implementing many people unfriendly policies in his short time in office, this can be said to be the case with the Change movement.

7) Is this the fruit of a “Common Sense Revolution?

Alhaji Bola Tinubu ( Party leader of the All Progressive Congress)

Alhaji Bola Tinubu and the APC call the change agenda a common sense revolution, forgetting that nothing special, powerful, successfully comes out of common sense, common sense is equal to average or mediocre. But even what is happening does not make sense at all, not to think of common sense, it is close to, if not nonsense. We don’t need common sense to lead Nigeria to her destiny as a great nation, we need Wisdom.

8) After one year in office has the promise of CHANGE changed to a CHANGE of Promise?

Chibok Girls captured by Boko Haram
If no

1) Where are the Chibok girls?

2) Why is security in Nigeria getting worse?

3) Why the increment in the pump price of petrol?

4) Why the difficulty in the payment of salaries?

5) Why the continued failure in power supply?

6) Why is there no payment of the promised N5000 to every youth?

7) Why is our National image dirty?

8) Why is the blame game still going on, with the new government not yet assuming responsibility after one year?

9) The list goes on and on.

10) Is this what we overwhelmingly bargained for?

9) If Mr. President were to answer these questions, what percentage of his answers will comprise of excuses (both understandable and lame)?

CONCLUSION

The one year in government of APC and President Buhari has generated more questions than we expected. But the President has 3 more years to prove to Nigerians that he was worth the trust, for this first year, it is a fail grade.

Even after saying this no one should even think of hoping, praying for the failure of the Buhari/APC government, it would be foolishness engendered by myopia and selfishness because if they fail, Nigeria will automatically roll back to ten years. Can this government succeed and rewrite these questions? I believe they can, should we be calm and be a little more patient, I believe yes, will it be better? I believe yes, because it is no use expecting for the worse, we have to hold our hope of a better tomorrow strong.

We call on President Buhari and the APC to proof themselves else, after 4 years, the big broom will be sweeping its original owners. One year later, Nigerians are surprised by CHANGE.

Drop your comments, we would like to hear from you.
