Ronaldo: Neymar ready to end Brazil's wait for Olympic gold

The legendary former Selecao striker believes the senior team captain will lead his young side to the all the way to glory at the Rio Games in August

Ending their long wait for Olympic gold is Brazil’s biggest objective of 2016.

And former great Ronaldo believes the side Dunga is set to lead into the Rio games in August have what it takes to finally grab the last major title the five-time world champions are yet to win.

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid star says field advantage will make the Selecao favourites – as will the presence of senior team captain Neymar, who will sit out of June’s Copa America Centenario in order to lead Brazil’s Olympians.

"Playing at home, with Neymar, I see a great possibility for the gold medal going to Brazil," Ronaldo said on Thursday during an event in Sao Paulo.

The two-time world champions went on to regret the absence of Neymar at the Copa America and lamented the busy calendar which has seen a number of high-profile players, Ronaldo included, to miss out on previous tournaments.

"It happened to me, being unable to play because I was not released by my club, or because of scheduling conflicts,” he said.

“The calendar is increasingly packed full of more games and more competitions, and then players like Neymar are forced to choose between playing a Copa America or the Olympics.”
