The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki |
The All Progressives Congress, APC, has formally reacted to reports alleging that the Senate was contemplating to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the purported move as ‘a huge joke taken too far.’
This came on a day Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, said senators’ meetings held in his house were designed to repair the frosty relationship between the executive and legislature and not to initiate impeachment move against the President.
This is even as Senator Dino Melaye denied ever initiating impeachment proceedings against President Buhari. In a statement yesterday, entitled President Buhari’s Purported Impeachment Threat, A Huge Joke by its scribe, Mai Mala Buni, APC advised the senators “to stop this huge joke and concentrate on their primary constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking and discharging of their legislative mandates to their constituents at the National Assembly.”
The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and two others are currently standing trial for alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Rules. On another score, Saraki is facing the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, for offences bordering on anticipatory declaration of assets, among others. The senate has constantly accused the executive of trying to stampede it into changing its leadership, warning that it would not bow to whims of some elements in the executive arm. However, APC has described the allegations as puerile and baseless.
The statement read in part: “The party will not join issues on the Senate forgery suit and other court cases concerning some members of the 8th Senate. “We advise the Senators in question to tow the same line and allow judicial processes run its normal and legitimate course. “Repeated allegations that the court cases are politically-motivated by the President and APC are baseless.”
