Chelsea have made a surprise £32million move to bring David Luiz back to Stamford Bridge.
The Brazil defender left for Paris Saint-Germain in June 2014 for £50million, a world record fee for a defender, but is ready to return to west London.
Chelsea have been frustrated in their search for a centre back, having had bids turned down for Alessio Romagnoli at AC Milan and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
- David Luiz left Chelsea for Paris Saint-Germain for £50m in June 2014
- Two years on, the Blues are eyeing a sensational move to re-sign defender
- Chelsea have been given encouragement that move would be possible
- Club are confident Antonio Conte can get the best out of centre-back
The Stamford Bridge outfit also considered exploring the loan market in a bid to strengthen their ranks.
But after being rebuffed when making initial enquiries about Luiz’s PSG team-mate Marquinhos last week, they begun talks over a deal for the Brazilian, despite initially being met with resistance.
Luiz, 29, was criticised after giving away a penalty in last week’s defeat to Monaco and was substituted by PSG’s new coach Unai Emery.
Chelsea are close to signing £23m Spanish left back Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. He was due in London on Tuesday night for a medical.
End of the line for Hart, Nasri and Toure?
Joe Hart has made 266 Premier League appearances for Manchester City |
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola made it clear that goalkeeper Joe Hart, 29, was free to find himself a new home.
Last week's signing of Claudio Bravo effectively pushed Hart down to City's third choice position and the England man has elected to join Italian side Torino on loan, with the deal set to be announced on Wednesday.
Also likely to be looking at the City exit doors are Samir Nasri, 29, and Yaya Toure, 33.
Nasri has been linked with a move to Spanish side Sevilla while Toure is yet to feature in a league match this season.
