Crystal Palace 1-2 Swansea Premier League Match Results and Highlight

Swansea beat Palace in front of watching Clement

DBliss Media Sports
Alfie Mawson (right) scored his first goal for Swansea since a £5m transfer from Barnsley in August
Newly appointed Swansea boss Paul Clement watched his side gain a dramatic win against Crystal Palace to move off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Clement was appointed earlier on Tuesday, although first-team coach Alan Curtis had picked the team for the game at Selhurst Park.

Alfie Mawson headed Swansea ahead from Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick, before Wilfried Zaha volleyed an equaliser.

But substitute Angel Rangel collected Leroy Fer's pass to net a late winner.

The result means Palace have only picked up one point in the three games since Sam Allardyce replaced Alan Pardew as manager in December.

Match Highlight

Plenty for Clement to be encouraged with

Paul Clement only lost seven of 33 games in a six-month spell in charge at Derby in 2015-16

Clement, a former Derby County boss, left his job as assistant manager at Bayern Munich to take over the Welsh side and said he was "excited" by the challenge.

He will also be delighted with and encouraged by his side's performance in a hard-fought victory.

They dominated the first half with Ki Sung-yueng shooting just wide and Fernando Llorente and Federico Fernandez heading narrowly off target before Mawson put Swansea ahead.

Clement began the game watching from the stands but later joined Curtis in the technical area to help guide Swansea to only their fourth league win of the season.

Another pleasing aspect for Clement will be the defensive performance. Centre-halves Mawson and Fernandez excelled, restricting Palace to only three shots on target.

A spectacular scissor kick from Zaha from 18 yards out looked to have denied Swansea before Rangel's first goal of the season, in the 88th minute, made it a perfect day for Clement.

The result takes Swansea above Hull up to 19th, only one point behind Crystal Palace in 17th.

Worrying times for Crystal Palace

Wilfried Zaha has been involved in 10 Premier League goals in 2016-17 (four goals, six assists), but he will not be available to Palace for at least three weeks as he is on Africa Cup of Nations duty
This was Allardyce's first home game in charge of the Eagles and he will be disappointed with his side's efforts against a team that came into the game with one away win in the league all season.

To make things worse for Allardyce, he will be without Ivorian goalscorer Zaha and Malian second-half substitute Bakary Sako, who will both now go to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Zaha has scored four goals this season, while Sako made an impact as a second-half substitute, forcing Lukasz Fabianski to tip a free-kick over, and causing the Swansea defence problems with his power.

Palace will also be hoping that a shoulder injury to top scorer Christian Benteke is not serious after he landed badly following a clash with Fabianski.

Allardyce was unhappy at two potential penalties that his side were denied - for Fabianski's challenge on Benteke and when Rangel appeared to handle the ball.

What they said

Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce: "The lack of energy the players had showed massively. We struggled to keep up with Swansea, we hadn't recovered properly. I should have made more changes but I still don't know the squad too well.

"The second half was ours, we saw a wonder goal from Wilfried Zaha that should have got us at least a point, but we switched off and it's massively disappointing.

"You can see it with your own eyes, you don't need to be a football manager. Some people say it's rubbish but it's not, the players were trying 100% but they were not physically able to reach their usual levels. They are shattered.

"It's beyond our control, certain elements. But we can defend better for the two goals and our first-half performance was nothing like I expect to see from my team."

Swansea first-team coach Alan Curtis: "It is a terrific result for us and a huge three points. The first-half performance, we were excellent and we could have gone in with more than the one goal.

"We have been accused of lacking character but we came back and won it and we deserved it. In training you see the players have the ability, it is just the confidence that has been lacking.

"Any team under Sam Allardyce will come on strongly, they have some terrific players. We had 24 hours more rest compared to them and that may have made a difference."

On the club's new manager Paul Clement, who joined Curtis in the technical area later in the match, he added: "He came down for some moral support, he made his presence felt at half-time, but there was not too much to say. We would have surprised a lot of people with our performance today."

What's next?

Paul Clement will take charge of a Swansea match for the first time when they play an FA Cup third round tie away at fellow Premier League strugglers Hull City on Saturday, 7 January (15:00 GMT). Crystal Palace are also in cup action at the same time, with an away game at League One side Bolton.

Both sides are next in Premier League action at 15:00 GMT on Saturday, 14 January. Palace play at West Ham with Swansea at home to Arsenal.

Arsenal 2-0 Crystal Palace Premier League Match Results and Highlights

Arsenal third after Giroud 'scorpion' goal

DBliss Media Sports
Olivier Giroud scored his second goal in as many games
Olivier Giroud's incredible scorpion kick set Arsenal on the way to a victory over Crystal Palace which moved them up to third in the Premier League.

With a cross from Alexis Sanchez delivered behind him, Frenchman Giroud elastically reached the ball with his left foot, looping it over his head and in off the underside of the bar.

An Alex Iwobi header gave Arsenal a scrappy second before Palace briefly rallied to force saves from home goalkeeper Petr Cech.

The win moves the Gunners back to within nine points of leaders Chelsea, while Palace stay 17th, two points above the relegation zone.

The visitors have won only once in 13 league games, with manager Sam Allardyce awaiting his first victory since taking over from Alan Pardew.

Giroud's magnificent moment of magic

Giroud was about 12 yards from goal when he applied his sensational finish to Sanchez's cross
Match Highlights

Giroud marked his return to the Arsenal starting line-up on Boxing Day by scoring the only goal in the win over West Bromwich Albion, and followed up here by pulling off one of the most memorable moments of this or any other season.

Indeed, it was made all the more remarkable for its echoes of a similarly breathtaking goal scored by Manchester United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the defeat of Sunderland on Monday.

If anything, Giroud's was even more impressive, an acrobatic finish to a head-high cross delivered from the left by Sanchez at the end of a pacy Arsenal counter-attack.

As the ball arrived, a sprinting Giroud turned to stick out his left foot, flicked the ball over his head and saw it arc over the leap of Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, off the woodwork and into the net.

"It was an unbelievable finish," said former Arsenal defender Martin Keown on BBC Radio 5 live. "It has to be up there with the goal of the season already.

"He's hooked that with a gadget foot - the ball is behind him and he has no right to get his foot to it."

'The best goal I've scored' - what they said

Olivier Giroud told BBC Sport: "It is not difficult to say it is the best one. I was a bit lucky but it was the only thing I could do, the ball was behind me and I tried to hit it with a backheel.

"Maybe Henrikh Mkhitaryan's goal inspired me, it's the only thing you can do in that position. It is nice for me and the team because we start the year with a win."

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey on Sky Sports: "It was a wonder goal - there seems to be a lot going in recently. It's a fantastic strike."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "It was a great counter-attack at great speed, his reflex surprised everybody who knows football and that's what makes the goal great.

"I have been a bit spoiled over the years by the exceptional quality of the players I've had, but it will be remembered as an exceptional goal.

"Olly is very good in front of goal, but I've never seen this kind of goal from him."

Man of the match - Olivier Giroud

Though Arsenal's full-backs were outstanding, it would be churlish not to single out Olivier Giroud, who produced something quite special.
What's next?

Both teams are in action on Tuesday. Arsenal make the trip to Bournemouth (19:45 GMT), while Palace host bottom club Swansea (20:00).

Crystal Palace 0-1 Chelsea Premier League Match Results & Highlights (Chelsea win to move nine points clear)

DBliss Media Sports
Diego Costa is the top goalscorer in the Premier League with 13 goals this season, more than he managed in the whole 2015-16 campaign
Chelsea equalled a club record as they beat Crystal Palace to secure their 11th successive Premier League win and move nine points clear at the top of the table.

Diego Costa put the Blues ahead with their first attempt on target as he headed in from Cesar Azpilicueta's floated cross.

Marcos Alonso nearly doubled the visitors' lead as he hit the underside of the crossbar with a curling 25-yard free-kick.

Palace's best chances fell to Jason Puncheon, but he headed wide and fired a free-kick narrowly over.

Chelsea also won 11 matches between April and September 2009, with the Premier League record Arsenal's 14-game winning run in 2002.

Match Highlights
Palace's defensive struggles continue

While it has been a glorious 12 months for Chelsea, the same cannot be said for Palace.

Yes, they reached the FA Cup final, losing 2-1 after extra time to Manchester United, but they have won only six of 36 Premier League games in 2016.

They have kept just one clean sheet in 22 top-flight matches, and are only three points above the relegation zone.

Scott Dann was at fault for Costa's goal - he was caught not watching the ball and failed to get off the ground to challenge.

What's next?

Both sides are in Premier League action again on Boxing Day, with Crystal Palace at Watford in the early game (12:30 GMT) and Chelsea hosting Bournemouth (15:00 GMT).

Chelsea will be without 13-goal top goalscorer Costa as a first-half foul on Joe Ledley saw the Spain striker get booked, his fifth yellow card of the season, and he will now serve a one-match suspension. Team-mate Kante will also be missing as he was also shown a fifth yellow card, following a number of fouls.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Man United Results & Highlights (Ibrahimovic scores late in second half to seal three points)

    DBliss Media Sports
    Pogba's goal
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a late winner as Manchester United beat struggling Crystal Palace in a highly controversial game at Selhurst Park.

James McArthur looked to have earned Palace a crucial point with a composed finish after a wonderful flicked pass by Damien Delaney.

United had taken the lead when Ibrahimovic appeared to handle a pass into the path of Paul Pogba, who finished from close range.

After McArthur's reply, the visitors were then denied a penalty when Palace substitute Joe Ledley handled in his own area before Juan Mata had a goal ruled out for a controversial offside decision.

Time was running out for United when Ibrahimovic earned Jose Mourinho's men back-to-back league wins for the first time since August

Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester City Match Highlights (Yaya Toure scores twice) #palacevcity

Yaya Toure made a spectacular return to Manchester City's first team - scoring twice as Pep Guardiola’s side saw off Crystal Palace.

Conor Wickham had threatened to spoil the party with his second half strike that looked like earning the home side a point.

But Toure, whose deflected effort put City in front in the first half, tapped home with seven minutes to go to secure a 2-1 win.

The Ivorian was a shock inclusion - starting his first Premier League game of the season.

And he made an emphatic statement opening the scoring after 39 minutes.

Palace came out with renewed vigour in the second half - piling the pressure on City’s goal while Selhurst Park rocked.

And just seconds after Sergio Aguero came within a whisker of putting the game out of sight Wickham struck.

With City staring down the barrell of a fourth draw in their last five Premier League games, Toure was on hand to tap over the line from six yards.

The one negative for City was another injury blow to Vincent Kompany, who lasted only 37 minutes with suspected concussion.

Crystal Palace 2-4 Liverpool Match highlight (Liverpool beat Palace to go level on pionts with leaders) #CRYLIV

Impish Coutinho impressed for the away side
Liverpool moved level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City courtesy of a thrilling victory at Crystal Palace.

Goals from Emre Can, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino secured the Reds' fifth win in six league games and only goal difference now separates City, second-placed Arsenal and Liverpool in third.

Despite their brilliance in attack, Liverpool's defence remains a weakness, with Lovren twice allowing James McArthur to level before the break.

It was a wonderfully entertaining match, with the opening 45 minutes particularly pleasing on the eye as defensive mishaps and attacking verve resulted in five goals - the most in a first half in the Premier League this season.

Indeed, the first three goals in a breathless encounter came within a hectic spell of five minutes and 45 seconds.

Liverpool were mesmerising going forward with Philippe Coutinho pulling the strings once again with his wonderful passing.

The Brazilian, 24, could have scored with a header, when Steve Mandanda brilliantly dived low to save an effort deflected off Joel Ward's hand.

Had an official seen Ward's transgression, the visitors would likely have been awarded a penalty.

Coutinho contributed two assists - his corners were headed home by Lovren and Matip - and played a part in Liverpool's opener, finding Alberto Moreno, whose cut-back gave Can the task of sweeping home from close range.

Phillipe Coutinho has assisted twice or more in a league game on six occasions since making his debut, which is the joint-most of any player in the competition in that time, along with Mesut Ozil and David Silva.
Arguably Coutinho's finest pass was the one which did not result in a goal, a perfectly weighted ball which cut through Palace's defence and set Sadio Mane free, with the summer signing drawing a fine save from Mandanda.

For all Coutinho's and Liverpool's attacking prowess, however, their defensive frailties meant victory was not certain until Firmino, put into space by captain Jordan Henderson, chipped over Mandanda.

    What the managers said

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew: "The first half was difficult on the sideline. We talked about putting them under pressure but in the first period we did not start well.

"We worked hard and defended well but we should have put more pressure on Liverpool. But they are a good team. Two set plays though, that is not us.

"We have to tighten up on that area. Our centre-backs are good but they got done. It is something we have to work on.

"In the second half, the game hinged on key moments. There were some penalty decisions which I thought were tight. We had a tight one last season with the same referee."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "In the first 15 minutes we were not really at 100% then in half an hour we created chance after chance. It was a close game and a deserved win at the end. I'm a very happy man.

"The defensive error we made for the first goal is because we are not at the limit of our concentration. The aggressiveness was not there at the start of the game. But I saw a lot of wonderful things offensively."

    What next

Liverpool will aim to make it three league victories on the trot when they host Watford on 6 November, while Crystal Palace travel to Burnley, a team equal with them on 11 points in the table, on 5 November.

Leicester City 3-1 Crystal Palace Match Highlights (Musa helps Leicester ease past Palace) #LeiCry

Ahmed Musa had not scored in a competitive game for Leicester
Leicester stretched their unbeaten home run to 20 league games as the Foxes followed up their midweek Champions League win with victory over Crystal Palace.

Record signing Ahmed Musa scored his first goal for the club, while Shinji Okazaki and Christian Fuchs struck after the break - the latter's effort a superb volley - to secure a convincing win.

Yohan Cabaye scored a consolation for the Londoners and Palace pressurised the hosts in the final five minutes as they attempted an unlikely comeback.

    EPL Table As It Stands

    Match Highlights
But it was too late against a Leicester side who showed something of the form that won them the title last season, even without England striker Jamie Vardy in the starting line-up.

Vardy, who played in the 1-0 win over Copenhagen and has not scored in eight games, was rested with manager Claudio Ranieri saying he needed to rotate his players as they juggles European and league commitments.

The Italian's decision was justified as Okazaki added guile to the Leicester attack, while Islam Slimani was a menacing presence up front.
