After a EFL Cup semi-final first leg victory over Hull City, Man United boss, Jose Mourinho has just moved a step closer to winning his first major title as Man United's manager, thanks to the brilliant goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini.

United attempted to weaken resilient Hull in a first half in which the hosts had only two shots on target - Mata driving a decent save out of goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic, who additionally tipped over Paul Pogba's long-run strike.

However, we shouldn't forget that visitors had chances of their own, Robert Snodgrass was causing problems from set-pieces and that was a serious threat to United defence.

Robert Snodgrass scored his sixth league goal of the season

Ross Barkley headed in a late equaliser for Everton against Hull, whose point was enough to move them off the bottom of the Premier League table.

The home side had taken the lead after just six minutes through captain Michael Dawson, who was unmarked inside the box and smashed in his third league goal of the season.

In response, Seamus Coleman headed against the post, before the Toffees levelled on the stroke of half-time as goalkeeper David Marshall punched the ball into his own from Kevin Mirallas's corner.

Marshall brilliantly tipped Romelu Lukaku's drive on to the crossbar in the second half, before Robert Snodgrass curled a free-kick into the top corner, having struck the bar from a similar situation just minutes before.

Hull remain in trouble

Manager Mike Phelan will feel the game was a missed opportunity to give Hull a lift towards their target of Premier League safety. The draw moves them up one place to 19th, but they are still three points away from moving out of the relegation zone.

Hull twice took the lead but their defensive vulnerabilities came to the fore in the closing stages as Barkley was allowed a free header for his goal.

It means the East Yorkshire side have now conceded 41 goals this season, a joint-league high alongside fellow strugglers Swansea.

They have also failed to keep a clean sheet at the KCOM Stadium this term and have collected just one win from their last 17 games.

With the January transfer window about to open, Phelan will be looking to bring in reinforcements, while also hoping to hold on the impressive Snodgrass.

Ageing Everton falter in defence

Ronald Koeman's side continued to show the inconsistency that has been a factor of their season.

They had won two out of their three matches before this game - yet before that, had picked up just one victory from 10 fixtures.

Like opponents Hull, they displayed defensive issues once again - Koeman's team have managed only four clean sheets in 19 Premier League matches under his leadership.

A centre-back will be on the list of priorities for the manager as Phil Jagielka, 34, looked to struggle at times.

The 35-year-old Gareth Barry - who came close with a drive in the first half - lasted 65 minutes, and it remains to be seen whether a transfer window move for Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin materialises.

Everton could have won it late on but substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed wide from a couple of yards out and the point leaves them in seventh, six points adrift of sixth-placed United, who host Middlesbrough on Saturday.

The best player on the pitch provided a moment of brilliance with a superb free-kick. He provided 12 crosses for his team-mates, more than any other player.

What the managers said

Hull boss Mike Phelan, speaking to BBC Sport about almost losing at the end: "That's the nature of the beast. We play well and we get beat. I'm pleased. For three or four weeks we've put in a shift and got nothing. We could be greedy and ask for more but I'm proud of the players.

"Robert Snodgrass has shown his quality on his free-kicks this season. We need those things. The top league demands top players to score top goals.

"We need more goals from all areas. We need to tighten up. We have a lot of work to do. It's now a case of trying to bring people in and give us a chance going forward."

Everton boss Ronald Koeman told BBC Sport: "I'm really pleased tonight about our performance. I wasn't happy with our slow start but we showed a really good attitude and reaction twice.

"We played good football and created a lot of opportunities. We could have stopped the first goal but not the second. The team showed good spirit. We created maybe the most chances today."

What next?

Hull start 2017 when they travel to face West Brom in the league on 2 January (kick-off 15:00 GMT), while Everton host Southampton at the same time.

Yaya Toure's penalty, awarded after Andrew Robertson's clumsy challenge on Raheem Sterling, set the visitors on their way before Kelechi Iheanacho added a second from close range and Curtis Davies conceded an own goal in the dying seconds.

Hull have now conceded nine penalties so far in the league this season - four more than any other side.

The hosts played well in patches and saw Michael Dawson's second-half header cleared off the line by Bacary Sagna, but their return of one win in 16 matches is a damning statistic that points to only one outcome come season's end.

And it will not be lost on Tigers fans that the side bottom on Christmas Day have only stayed up three times in the 24 Premier League seasons to date.

Chelsea stopped the rot after successive Premier League defeats as they ground down Hull at the KCOM Stadium.

The hosts enjoyed the better of a cagey first half but went behind when Willian swept home a curling shot after good work from Diego Costa after the break.

Liverpool claimed a third straight Premier League win courtesy of an emphatic victory over 10-man Hull.

Ahmed Elmohamady saw red for handball in the box, with James Milner scoring from the spot before Sadio Mane added a third for the home side.

Livermore sent off for Struggling Hull

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez scored twice and missed a penalty as the Gunners won comfortably at 10-man Hull City.

Sanchez put Arsenal ahead when he got a touch on Alex Iwobi's shot, but failed from the spot after Jake Livermore handled and was sent off.

Theo Walcott added a second after the break before Robert Snodgrass pulled one back for the hosts with a penalty.

Sanchez added a third before Granit Xhaka rounded off the scoring.

Leicester's defence of their Premier League title began with a shock defeat at newly promoted Hull, who are managerless and relegation favourites.

Under caretaker boss Mike Phelan, Hull took the lead when Adama Diomande and Abel Hernandez combined acrobatically, with Diomande awarded the goal.

Riyad Mahrez replied from the penalty spot at the start of the second half after Demarai Gray had been fouled.

But Robert Snodgrass earned the Tigers victory after a cross was not cleared.

Danny Simpson's clearance from Ahmed Elmohamady's ball into the area only found Snodgrass on the edge of the box, and he drilled home.

It is the first time the reigning English champions have started the season with a defeat since 1989, when Arsenal lost at Manchester United.

What was wrong with Leicester?

The Foxes' title success was built on a solid defence and impressive finishing, but they managed neither at the KCom Stadium.

With Robert Huth suspended, summer signing Luis Hernandez came into the Leicester back four, which looked vulnerable whenever Hull attacked down the flanks.

The defending champions also struggled up front, with Jamie Vardy missing their best chances - and they needed the help of referee Mike Dean for their equaliser.

Tom Huddlestone appeared to stand on Ahmed Musa's heels outside the Hull area, but Leicester's £18m record signing fell into the box and Dean pointed to the spot.

Vardy, who scored 24 Premier League goals last season, miscued badly from two Musa pull-backs and had another follow-up effort blocked by Jake Livermore after Christian Fuchs' shot was saved.

But otherwise Leicester created little against a makeshift Hull defence that featured midfielder Livermore at centre-half alongside Curtis Davies.
