Southampton 1-0 Liverpool EFL Cup Match Result and Highlight

Saint take narrow EFL Cup lead over Liverpool

DBliss Media Sports
Nathan Redmond had not netted in 16 games for Southampton before opening the scoring
It was a great day for Southampton, when Nathan Redmond's cool finish from Jay Rodriguez's pass gave Saints a crucial lead to take to Anfield on 25 January - but Southampton can count themselves unlucky not to be in complete control of this battle for a place at Wembley.

Liverpool's most criticised goalkeeper Loris Karius was one of not very many in Jurgen Klopp's side to separate himself in the midst of a shocking performance, making two fine first-half saves from goalscorer Redmond.

Karius did what he could do for the Reds, but unfortunately for him and Liverpool, Redmond kept on attacking causing problems for Liverpool.

After a brief early spell of Liverpool weight, when Roberto Firmino tried Fraser Forster, Southampton were totally untroubled all through a noteworthy performance.

They will be left, in any case, with a tinge of disappointment in spite of a fantastic, completely justified outcome that gives them genuine purpose behind positive thinking for the second leg at Anfield.

Sunderland 2-2 Liverpool Premier League Match Results and Highlights

Defoe scores two penalties as Sunderland hold Liverpool

DBliss Media Sports
Jermain Defoe has scored 11 of Sunderland's 19 Premier League goals this season
Two Jermain Defoe penalties meant Sunderland twice came from behind to earn a point against second-placed Liverpool.

The Reds took a deserved lead when Daniel Sturridge flicked in a header after Dejan Lovren's mishit shot.
EPL Table As It Stands

Sunderland equalised six minutes later as Defoe scored from the spot following Ragnar Klavan's trip on Didier Ndong, before Sadio Mane put the visitors back ahead with a close-range finish.

However, Mane then handled in his own 18-yard box and Defoe converted the penalty to snatch an unlikely point.

Match Highlights

Liverpool's missed opportunity

The result leaves Liverpool five points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, who play their game in hand on Wednesday at Tottenham (20:00 GMT kick-off).

However, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will surely see it as two points dropped after his side led twice, had 71% of the possession and had 15 shots on target.

Only an inspired performance from Black Cats keeper Vito Mannone denied Liverpool further goals, before Mane needlessly stuck out an arm to block Seb Larsson's free-kick, costing his side dearly.

To make things worse for Liverpool, Sturridge, who scored only his second Premier League goal of the season, limped off late on after clashing with Papy Djilobodji.

Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City Premier League Match Results and Highlights

Liverpool beat Man City thanks to Wijnaldum goal

DBliss Media
Georginio Wijnaldum's header was the difference in a game of few clear chances
Liverpool maintained their pursuit of Premier League leaders Chelsea as they moved to within six points of the pacesetters with victory over Manchester City at Anfield.

Georginio Wijnaldum's soaring eighth-minute header from Adam Lallana's cross was enough to put Liverpool in second place and put a serious dent in City's own title challenge.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp led the celebrations at the end of a game that was high on energy but sadly lacking in any moments of genuine quality.

City, who laboured throughout, improved in the second half but never seriously threatened Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and this loss leaves them 10 points adrift of Chelsea.

Klopp gets better of Pep.

Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola were meeting for the first time in England

Match Highlights

This was the first Premier League meeting between two huge personalities straight from the top tier of management - and it brought a victory for Jurgen Klopp to cherish at Pep Guardiola's expense.

The head-to-head was locked at 4-4 after their meetings in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. This was a different stage with different prizes on offer - but it was an occasion that was just as charged.

Klopp, in 15 months, has revitalised Liverpool and given hope to supporters longing to end the wait for a first title since 1990. And as they continue their pursuit of relentless Chelsea, belief continues to grow that the charismatic German can still haul in Antonio Conte's side.

Liverpool's manager was, as usual, celebrating with his players after the final whistle before pumping his chest in mock relief in front of Anfield's huge new Main Stand.

And, when City fleetingly threatened a second-half comeback, he turned cheerleader in front of those same fans with a demand to lift the noise levels that was met instantly.

Klopp has become the new Anfield talisman. Under him, the transformation of his team and the mood around the club continues.

Something else that will give Liverpool's fans great heart is the way in which Klopp is getting results against his closest rivals.

Since his appointment in October 2015, Klopp has faced a total of 13 Premier League games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham. He has lost only one - a single goal defeat by United last season.

He has also enjoyed a Europa League win over two legs against United, although the balance is redressed slightly by a loss on penalties against Manchester City in last season's Capital One Cup final.

Man of the match - Georginio Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum's header was the difference in a game of few clear chances

What they said

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "I know everyone talks about our defence. It's not about avoiding goals - that's the end product - it's about how we work together.

"I think we have the smallest number of shots on our goal in the league. Tonight the concentration level was outstanding.

"I don't care about criticism of our defence. You always pick out things that aren't right but that's how goals are."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola: "It was an equal game. The goal made it difficult against a team who use the counter-attack like a master. The second half was much better.

"We have to wake up for another game. We need to focus and work - we can't think about the big goals."

What's next?

A swift turnaround. City host Burnley at 15:00 GMT on Monday, while at the same time Liverpool are at struggling Sunderland.

Liverpool playmaker, Philippe Coutinho to miss Manchester City game

DBliss Media

Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho will not return from an ankle injury in time to face Manchester City on New Year's Eve, boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The Brazil playmaker, 24, has missed six games with an injury picked up in November's win over Sunderland.

Klopp plays down Guardiola rivalry

"The City game is too early and I'm pretty sure the Sunderland match on Monday is too early too," Klopp said.

The Reds manager also confirmed that defender Joel Matip will miss the City game with an ankle injury.

The title rivals meet at Anfield on Saturday (17:30 GMT), with second-placed Liverpool one point above City in the Premier League.

Klopp said: "We love playing the best and they are in the groove of one of the best teams in the world.

"This is a very big game for both teams. Six clubs fight for four or one positions. Each game is kind of a final. If I wasn't sitting on the bench, I would buy a ticket for the game 100%."

Klopp was asked about the fact he has not been to Etihad Stadium to watch City. "I can see better from home rather than always standing up for selfies in the ground," said the German.

He also praised City boss Pep Guardiola, his former Bundesliga managerial rival.

"Our teams are completely different from when Dortmund and Bayern played each other," he continued.

"We know everything about how Pep played with Bayern but that is not important any more because it is different players and different systems. He was very nearly perfect with Barcelona. He had a big influence with Bayern and changed their style completely.

"He is an outstanding manager, 100%."

Klopp denied newspaper reports suggesting Liverpool could sign Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 23.

"Usually I don't say anything about transfers but I will make an exception. Nonsense," he said.

Liverpool 4-1 Stoke Results and Highlights: Talking points from the Reds' big win at Anfield closing the gap on Chelsea

DBliss Media Sports
Adam Lallana has been directly involved in eight league goals in seven games at Anfield this season (four goals and four assists)
Liverpool closed the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea to six points and moved to second in the league after maintaining their unbeaten home record with a convincing victory over Stoke.

Jon Walters headed home at his near post, highlighting the home team's vulnerability in defence, to give Stoke an early lead.

But Liverpool responded positively after a disjointed start, with Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino scoring before the break as the hosts took the lead.

Jurgen Klopp's men made sure of the win, which moves them one point ahead of third-placed Manchester City - whom they play on New Year's Eve - when Giannelli Imbula directed Divock Origi's cross into his own net.

Adding gloss to the scoreline was Daniel Sturridge, who scored his first league goal of the season - and Liverpool's 100th under manager Klopp.

Match Highlights

While Boxing Day off may have seemed like a blessing for Liverpool, it ultimately meant they had to sit back and watch Chelsea win for a 12th time in a row, Man City leapfrog them into second and Arsenal move to within one point with victory over West Brom.

There was a period in the first half when Liverpool looked exposed. Simon Mignolet, again preferred in goal to Loris Karius as Klopp stuck to the team which started the derby win against Everton, should have saved Walters' close-range header.

It was a mistake which will once again open up the debate over who should be the manager's first-choice goalkeeper. But, in attack, the Reds were as quick, incisive and destructive as they have been throughout the season.

Liverpool have now scored 86 league goals in 2016 - their most in a calendar year since 1985 - and they ended the match having made a total of 20 shots, six of which were on target.

Once the impressive Lallana equalised, sweeping home from an acute angle after Glen Johnson failed to clear the danger inside his six-yard box, Liverpool were completely dominant.

And there was a sense of inevitability when Firmino, allowed to turn unchallenged in the box, scored - his low shot bouncing in off the far and then near post.

As has been the case for the majority of this season, Sadio Mane and James Milner were key cogs, with the latter's tireless runs down the left flank giving Stoke an extra worry.

Stoke in another sticky run

Walters' goal was only the third league goal Stoke have scored at Anfield in 40 years
Stoke, now winless in four league games, caused Liverpool's defence a number of problems in the first half, with former players Peter Crouch and Joe Allen instrumental for the Potters.

Crouch, starting for the first time since August, held the ball up well while the tigerish Allen played like a man eager to prove a point to the club that sold him to Stoke for £13m in the summer. Indeed, the Welshman could have doubled the visiting team's advantage but instead forced a fine save from Mignolet.

Stoke sought to contain their opponents by attacking them and it was a ploy which worked until Liverpool levelled and Mark Hughes' men suddenly found themselves penned inside their own half as the hosts confidently sprayed the ball around.

Defensive errors contributed to Stoke's downfall. The visitors ceded possession too easily in their own half for Liverpool's third and Ryan Shawcross' clumsy pass back to goalkeeper Lee Grant allowed Sturridge a clear run through for a goal the striker described as a "gift".

Having recovered from a terrible start to the season, Stoke now find themselves in another sticky run, though there is a seven-point cushion between them and the relegation zone.

Everton 0-1 Liverpool EPL Match Results and Highlights (Mane wins derby for liverpool in injury time)

DBliss Media Sports
Sadio Mane celebrating his injury time goal for Liverpool (LFC)
Sadio Mane's goal deep into injury time sank Everton and settled a scrappy Merseyside derby in Liverpool's favour at Goodison Park.

The Reds' £34m summer signing from Southampton reacted first to a loose ball after substitute Daniel Sturridge's shot had hit the post in the fourth of eight minutes of stoppage time.

Everton, who had lost goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg to injury in the second half, have now won just one of their past 20 meetings with their local rivals.

Liverpool - who moved up to second - created the better chances, with Stekelenburg and his replacement Joel Robles saving well from Roberto Firmino.

There was a flashpoint in the second half when a dreadful tackle by Ross Barkley on Jordan Henderson sparked angry scenes and the Everton midfielder was fortunate to escape with only a yellow card from referee Mike Dean.

Big win for Klopp and Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's celebrations at the final whistle carried an extra edge as Mane's late strike sealed three points they desperately needed to keep in touch with Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool are six points behind Antonio Conte's side and will surely take great satisfaction from digging out a vital victory that was based on grit rather than the flowing football that has been their trademark this season.

The hosts' high tempo start put the Reds on the back foot but as the game went on they exerted greater control and in the end deserved the win simply for looking the more dangerous side and creating the better chances.

And once again Sturridge proved how important he can be to Klopp and Liverpool's cause - despite being marginalised or injured for much of the season - with the run and shot that struck the post before Mane swooped to win the 227th Merseyside derby.

Liverpool needed to bounce back from the stumbles of a shock 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth and a home draw against West Ham United. They have done so in style with away wins at Middlesbrough and now Everton.

Match Highlights

Everton's wait goes on

Everton's record in Merseyside derbies has been a tale of almost unbroken misery since their last win, a 2-0 win against Roy Hodgson's Liverpool in October 2010.

There are, however, signs of improvement and they will feel unfortunate not to hold out here and concede so late on.

For the first 45 minutes they adhered to boss Ronald Koeman's demand for a high-intensity pressing game but ran out of steam after the break, not helped by the loss of James McCarthy to injury.

Substitute Gareth Barry may still possess the old guile, but sadly for him and Everton the legs are also ageing and he was miles off the pace - though his substitute appearance did take him second behind Ryan Giggs in the list of most Premier League games played.

Everton also failed to give sufficient support to main marksman Romelu Lukaku and Koeman will surely be looking to address this problem in the January transfer window.

There are signs that the Toffees are now moving in the right direction, despite suffering their first home Premier League defeat of the season - but Koeman still has much to do.
Barkley lucky not to see red

Barkley has been the centre of much attention this season, whether as the victim of tough love from Koeman or with transfer speculation as he enters the last 18 months of his contract.

Here he was centre of attention for different reasons after a late touchline lunge on his England team-mate Henderson in the second half that was somehow only punished with a yellow card.

It led to angry exchanges between the players, and Henderson and Barkley also clashed later, the latter wisely not rising to the Liverpool captain's bait.

Barkley's night was summed up by a wild cross into the Gwladys Street that brought a furious response from his manager.

These are tough times for the talented 23-year-old midfielder.

Man of the match - Ragnar Klavan (Liverpool)

The Liverpool defence quelled the threat of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, largely thanks to Ragnar Klavan's stewardship of the forward

What they said

Everton manager Ronald Koeman told BBC Sport: "We are really disappointed to concede in extra time. The eight minutes killed us.

"We have to wait to see about Maarten Stekelenburg's injury - we will know more tomorrow - and James McCarthy has a hamstring injury.

"I know exactly how fast Sadio Mane is, he reacted so well. We did not deserve to concede this goal.

"Maybe Ross Barkley was lucky, it was a hard tackle."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told BBC Sport: "I don't agree it was a poor first half. Maybe not the best football - you have to adapt to Everton's wild game. A game like this you have to interrupt their rhythm with passing.

"In the second half it was clear they couldn't do the same. We were better, we didn't give one chance away I think.

"The goal was not the hardest shot from Sturridge, but hard enough. It was a wonderful feeling.

"I don't like the flares too much. I'm a little bit scared about this. It was a long, long stoppage time. We gave them no chance."

On Barkley's tackle on Henderson: "I saw it one time. Everything is clear. I think the referee had a difficult game. Maybe Ross was really lucky and Henderson was really lucky."

What's up next?

Everton travel to champions Leicester City on 26 December (15:00 GMT kick-off), before a trip to Hull on 30 December (20:00). Liverpool host Stoke at 17:15 on 27 December and then welcome Manchester City to Anfield on 31 December (17:30).

Middlesbrough 0-3 Liverpool Premier League Results & Highlights (Lallana at the double as Reds move second)

Lallana Celebrates
Jurgen Klopp's side returned to winning ways in some style with Divock Origi also on target as the hosts lose again to increase their fears of relegation

Liverpool moved into second place in the Premier League table, above Arsenal on goal difference, after a comfortable 3-0 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Aitor Karanka's side conceded three goals in a home game for the first time in almost two and a half years - underlining the impressive nature of this win.

Lallana's opener put the Reds ahead during an even first half in which Simon Mignolet was a reassuring presence in goal after Jurgen Klopp axed the jittery Loris Karius.

Liverpool then made sure that Klopp's selection was justified with an electric second-half performance, scoring a pair of exceptionally worked goals to pull clear.

While Klopp's men are on the up again, Boro are just three points above the relegation zone after back-to-back scoreless defeats.

EPL Table As It Stands

While Liverpool struggled to pick the gaps in Middlesbrough's defence early on, Mignolet passed his first two examinations by keeping hold of a skidding Fabio da Silva shot and Ben Gibson's header.

Adam Clayton snapped into a block on Sadio Mane after Adama Traore had lost possession in a perilous position, but the chance perhaps gave the Reds momentum and they duly took the lead.

Nathaniel Clyne found space on the right flank and arced a superb deep cross to the back post, where Lallana was racing in to power past Adam Forshaw and plant a firm header beyond Victor Valdes.

Mignolet was again sharp to repel Viktor Fischer's near-post drive and Liverpool ought to have been two up at the break, but Mane hit the post after breaking clear and Origi slammed a follow-up effort into the side-netting.

Mane had a pair of efforts in the opening two minutes of the second half saved by Valdes and blocked by Calum Chambers respectively as Liverpool took a more direct route to goal.

Passing aimed forwards rather than sideways paid dividends in spectacular fashion on the hour mark as a one-two between Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum opened up space and the Dutchman's return pass ran to Lallana, who squared for Origi to thump home.

Eight minutes later, victory was assured, Origi sweeping up after Mane was felled and returning the favour for Lallana with a square ball that the England midfielder finished coolly to register a fifth league goal of the season, already matching his best tally for the Reds.

There was no sign of the defensive shambles that had cost Klopp points in their last two games, Mignolet again a confident presence after the break, perhaps offering an early Christmas gift in Liverpool's title tilt.
