While sports anthems tend to be pump-up music (Andy Mineo's uptempo "You Can't Stop Me" won best walk-up song in the MLB in 2015), Marquardt opted for heartfelt.
"Oh Lord", track No. 7 on NF's new album Therapy Session, begins as follows:
When I die, put my ashes in the trash bag /
I don't care where they go /
Don't waste your money on my gravestone /
I'm more concerned about my soul
It's safe to say this will likely be the deepest song those 45,000 fans hear at UFC 198.
Therapy Session has firmly established NF as one of the faces of Christian hip hop today.
His sophomore album on Capitol CMG Label Group debuted on Billboard this week, and its numbers trump all Christian hip-hop releases this year besides Lecrae's surprise mixtape Church Clothes 3, which sold 29,207 album-equivalent units in Week 1. Therapy Sessions old 29,184.
NF's platform grew dramatically between the releases of his freshman and sophomore LPs on Capitol CMG. Mansion, which dropped March 31, 2015, sold 10,169 units in Week 1. See how the albums' first weeks on Billboard compare to each other below.
Therapy Session debut Billboard rankings (Mansion debut rankings in parenthesis):
These rankings are even more impressive when Prince's effect on them is factored in. The legendary singer's death the day before the release ofTherapy Session skyrocketed his discography up the charts.
While Therapy Session's No. 12 spot on the Billboard 200 ties it withChurch Clothes 3 for the highest ranking in Christian hip hop this year, it's the seventh-highest non-Prince project on the chart.

Over the past year, 25-year-old recording artist NF has drawn a fanatical following with emotional music — none more vulnerable than a new song written to his mother, who died from a drug overdose in 2009.
On “How Could You Leave Us”, track No. 4 from his album Therapy Session, which was released on Friday April 22. In this song, NF weeps as he asks his mother why she loved him less than the pills she grew addicted to. This neglection, he expresses, makes the image of his future children without the grandmother they should’ve had no more easy.
I got this picture in my room and it kills me /
But I don't need a picture of my mom, I need the real thing /
Now a relationship is something we won't ever have /
Why do I feel like I lost something that I never had?
NF’s transparency on “How Could You Leave Us” epitomizes the concept of Therapy Session.

“I mean, I think sometimes people, they confuse what I'm doing,” NF said on the outro of the Therapy Session title track. “I write about life. I write about things that I'm actually dealing with, something that I'm actually experiencing. This is real for me, like this is something that personally helps me as well. I'm not confused about who gave me the gift. God gave me the gift, and he gave me the ability to do this. And he also gave me this as an outlet. And that's what music is for me.
“When I feel something, whether it's anger, it's a passion about something or frustration, like, this is where I go. This is ... that's the whole ‘nfrealmusic’ thing, man. This is real for me. I need this. This is a therapy for me.”
"I Just Wanna Know" available on iTunes now as second released song from upcoming album 'Therapy Session"
Capitol Records rapper NF has released his latest song and music video for "I Just Wanna Know" from upcoming album Therapy Session.
You can watch the music video below.
The music video continues NF's trend of creating visually intense, brooding art pieces to accompany his raw musical style. "I Just Wanna Know" details the demise of a relationship, a theme the video explores by portraying NF arguing with a girl in a car before it flips off the road, apparently severely injuring her.
This is the second track to release from upcoming album Therapy Session, following the launch of "Intro 2" a few weeks ago. The music video for "Intro 2" has already surpassed 335,000 views, more proof of the high anticipation riding on NF's sophomore followup to last year's breakthrough debut Mansion. Therapy Sessionwill be available on April 22. You can get "Intro 2" and "I Just Wanna Know" on iTunes now here: http://smarturl.it/TherapySession.
Grand Rapids, Michigan-based artist NF has announced the release date and title, as well as unveiled the cover art, of his sophomore album on Capitol CMG Label Group.
NF will follow-up his label debut LP, Mansion, with the release of a project called Therapy Session on April 22, according to the following tweet he sent this morning.
Rapzilla interviewed NF briefly about his upcoming album a few months ago.
"I’m excited about it," he said. "If you’re an NF fan and you like the first record, I think you’re going to love this record. You might like it more. I don’t know. It’s really grimy. It’s really in your face, kind of like the first record.
"But it’s also very diverse. I like different styles of music. I’ll listen to Ed Sheeran, and then I’ll listen to Drake. I just want to make an album that represents me, but also is different from what people are doing, and I think that’s what I’m doing. I’m pumped about the record."
As the title Therapy Session suggests, NF said he will dive deeper into some issues he had rapped about on his previous project.
"On Mansion, I mention a lot of problems," he said. "I feel like this next record, I go in to detail about some things I’ve been mentioning along the way — a lot more detail."
Therapy Session has high expectations, thanks to the success of Mansion, which finished 2015 the 25th highest-selling Christian project of the year and the second highest-selling Christian rap project of the year.
NF wasn’t speaking hypothetically when he said, “I got some people that write me like, ‘I wish you'd die like your momma did,’” on Marty of Social Club’s song “The One with My Friends.”
“I wouldn’t say it if it didn’t happen,” NF told Rapzilla. “I go into more detail on my [new album]. Obviously on a feature, I only got a few lines. But yeah, that’s not even close to the worst thing that I’ve been written.”
NF is the fastest-growing artist affiliated with Christian hip hop. He just released his Capitol CMG Label Group debut album Mansion last March, and it finished 2015 the 25th highest-selling Christian project of the year — and the second highest-selling Christian rap project of the year.
A growing fan base comes with a growing troll pool, which NF has discovered as he’s risen. Understandably, he admits the trolls can get under his skin. But until he learns not to read the comments, NF said he’s been able to channel his frustration in to music.
“When I first see things like that, it makes me really angry because everybody’s 20-feet tall on Facebook,” he said. “It helps me as an artist, though, because that gave me a lot of energy for this next record because I am growing as a person. I still have a lot of issues I’m dealing with. On Mansion, I mention a lot of problems. I feel like this next record, I go in to detail about some things I’ve been mentioning along the way — a lot more detail.
“When I write a song called ‘Face It,’ that could mean anything; I don’t know how to face anything. I think on this next record, there are some songs that really give you what’s going on with me. And people writing me stuff like that, there are a lot of parts in songs that have been influenced from statements like that.”
NF said his sophomore album on Capitol CMG Label Group will release this year, although new music could come sooner rather than later.
NEW ALBUM COVER IS FINISHED!!! SO MUCH COMING!!!— NF (@nfrealmusic) January 28, 2016
Below is an excerpt of Rapzilla’s interview with NF about his upcoming album and his song “I’ll Keep On” featuring Jeremiah Carlson — the only Christian hip-hop to land on Billboard’s year-end Hot Christian Songs chart based on radio airplay.
Rapzilla: What is the story behind “I’ll Keep On”?
NF: That song is basically me talking about how I think a lot of times Christians for some reason find it weird to talk about the struggle of reading your Bible. That kind of stuff I really struggle with personally because I’m a go-go-go person and I hate reading, but really that’s no excuse for not doing stuff like that.
But I struggle with it, so “I’ll Keep On” was more of like, trying to do something different, have a little break in the album, but also a song that came out because that’s how I really feel. I do have a Bible that sits next to my bed, and I feel like I don’t really do much with it.
RZ: As a Christian artist, were you hesitant to say that in a song? What kind of reactions did you expect from that?
NF: Honestly, I think it’s ridiculous what the Christian market is so sensitive about. If you’re too good or too scared to say that you struggle with reading your Bible, then you got other problems to worry about I feel like. That doesn’t bother me at all. This second album I said a lot more stuff. If that bothers you, I wouldn’t buy my second album.
RZ: I think that was one of the more moving songs on Mansion, so I’m sure you got many reactions to it, but was there one that stood out to you the most?
NF: Actually, most of my personal stuff that gets written to me is not about that song. I get tons from that song, but most of my stuff is “Mansion,” more of the harder stuff. That’s more of what I do. The really deep messages I get written are from songs like “Mansion” or, it’d surprise some people, but even songs like “Face It.”
“I’ll Keep On” is a little more out of the box. I think it’s easier for some people to listen to. It definitely has helped me a lot, and a lot of people relate to it and love it. That’s why the song I feel does so well, and I feel like sometimes we don’t talk about relatable things.
I don’t do it so it’s relatable. I do it because it’s real life. It’s what I’m dealing with, but it is relatable. When I started music when I was a kid. I didn’t write it for thousands of people to listen to. I didn’t even know what I was doing. I was just writing my life. And so it’s cool to see music impact people like that.
RZ: What can you say about your next album?
NF: I’m excited about it. If you’re an NF fan and you like the first record, I think you’re going to love this record. You might like it more. I don’t know. It’s really grimy. It’s really in your face, kind of like the first record. But it’s also very diverse. I like different styles of music. I’ll listen to Ed Sheeran, and then I’ll listen to Drake. I just want to make an album that represents me, but also is different from what people are doing, and I think that’s what I’m doing. I’m pumped about the record.
When Billboard revealed its year-end 2015 charts, a few Christian rap-related results stood out.
No. 1: The top-selling Christian hip-hop album of the year wasn’t released this year. Lecrae’s Anomaly came out in Sept. 2014 and still accomplished the feat. Anomaly was also the 21st-highest selling rap album overall, charting there for the second straight year, which is uncommon for rap albums in general and unheard of for Christian hip hop-affiliated albums.
No. 2: The top-selling Christian hip-hop album released this year was NF’s Mansion, which means for the first time since at least 2006, a rapper who is not signed to Reach Records has released one of the 50 highest-selling Christian albums of the year. And for the first time since at least 2009, Reach did not release the top-selling Christian hip-hop album which dropped that year.
While Mansion had a five-month head start on Andy Mineo’sUncomfortable and the backing of a major label, the Universal Music Group-owned Capitol CMG, the accomplishment remains noteworthy. While dozens of Christian hip-hop artists have charted on Billboard based on their first-week sales, only a select few have maintained momentum enough to be one of the 50 highest-selling Christian albums of the year.
Here are all of the Christian hip-hop albums that have pulled this off since 2006, the first year that Billboard’s website has the yearly chart tracked (rank in parenthesis).
