Newly appointed Swansea boss Paul Clement watched his side gain a dramatic win against Crystal Palace to move off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Clement was appointed earlier on Tuesday, although first-team coach Alan Curtis had picked the team for the game at Selhurst Park.

Alfie Mawson headed Swansea ahead from Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick, before Wilfried Zaha volleyed an equaliser.

But substitute Angel Rangel collected Leroy Fer's pass to net a late winner.

The result means Palace have only picked up one point in the three games since Sam Allardyce replaced Alan Pardew as manager in December.

Plenty for Clement to be encouraged with

Paul Clement only lost seven of 33 games in a six-month spell in charge at Derby in 2015-16

Clement, a former Derby County boss, left his job as assistant manager at Bayern Munich to take over the Welsh side and said he was "excited" by the challenge.

He will also be delighted with and encouraged by his side's performance in a hard-fought victory.

They dominated the first half with Ki Sung-yueng shooting just wide and Fernando Llorente and Federico Fernandez heading narrowly off target before Mawson put Swansea ahead.

Clement began the game watching from the stands but later joined Curtis in the technical area to help guide Swansea to only their fourth league win of the season.

Another pleasing aspect for Clement will be the defensive performance. Centre-halves Mawson and Fernandez excelled, restricting Palace to only three shots on target.

A spectacular scissor kick from Zaha from 18 yards out looked to have denied Swansea before Rangel's first goal of the season, in the 88th minute, made it a perfect day for Clement.

The result takes Swansea above Hull up to 19th, only one point behind Crystal Palace in 17th.

Worrying times for Crystal Palace

Wilfried Zaha has been involved in 10 Premier League goals in 2016-17 (four goals, six assists), but he will not be available to Palace for at least three weeks as he is on Africa Cup of Nations duty

This was Allardyce's first home game in charge of the Eagles and he will be disappointed with his side's efforts against a team that came into the game with one away win in the league all season.

To make things worse for Allardyce, he will be without Ivorian goalscorer Zaha and Malian second-half substitute Bakary Sako, who will both now go to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Zaha has scored four goals this season, while Sako made an impact as a second-half substitute, forcing Lukasz Fabianski to tip a free-kick over, and causing the Swansea defence problems with his power.

Palace will also be hoping that a shoulder injury to top scorer Christian Benteke is not serious after he landed badly following a clash with Fabianski.

Allardyce was unhappy at two potential penalties that his side were denied - for Fabianski's challenge on Benteke and when Rangel appeared to handle the ball.

Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce: "The lack of energy the players had showed massively. We struggled to keep up with Swansea, we hadn't recovered properly. I should have made more changes but I still don't know the squad too well.

"The second half was ours, we saw a wonder goal from Wilfried Zaha that should have got us at least a point, but we switched off and it's massively disappointing.

"You can see it with your own eyes, you don't need to be a football manager. Some people say it's rubbish but it's not, the players were trying 100% but they were not physically able to reach their usual levels. They are shattered.

"It's beyond our control, certain elements. But we can defend better for the two goals and our first-half performance was nothing like I expect to see from my team."

Swansea first-team coach Alan Curtis: "It is a terrific result for us and a huge three points. The first-half performance, we were excellent and we could have gone in with more than the one goal.

"We have been accused of lacking character but we came back and won it and we deserved it. In training you see the players have the ability, it is just the confidence that has been lacking.

"Any team under Sam Allardyce will come on strongly, they have some terrific players. We had 24 hours more rest compared to them and that may have made a difference."

On the club's new manager Paul Clement, who joined Curtis in the technical area later in the match, he added: "He came down for some moral support, he made his presence felt at half-time, but there was not too much to say. We would have surprised a lot of people with our performance today."

Paul Clement will take charge of a Swansea match for the first time when they play an FA Cup third round tie away at fellow Premier League strugglers Hull City on Saturday, 7 January (15:00 GMT). Crystal Palace are also in cup action at the same time, with an away game at League One side Bolton.

Both sides are next in Premier League action at 15:00 GMT on Saturday, 14 January. Palace play at West Ham with Swansea at home to Arsenal.

Ryan Giggs: Swansea City rule out Welshman as Bob Bradley's replacement

Bayern Munich assistant manager Paul Clement and former Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett are the frontrunners to be the next Swansea City manager.

Swansea City have ruled out Ryan Giggs as a possible successor to Bob Bradley.

Giggs, 43, was the favourite for the job following Bradley's exit on Tuesday but the club are looking elsewhere.

Wales boss Chris Coleman remains a contender despite his wife tweeting on Thursday that the couple intend to move abroad once his contract expires in 2018.

Bayern Munich assistant Paul Clement is also understood to be in contention, as well as ex-Birmingham boss Gary Rowett.

Like Giggs, Clement was interviewed for the job in the autumn before Bradley replaced Francesco Guidolin.

Former Derby County manager Clement is thought to have impressed the Swansea hierarchy.

The Swans, 19th in the Premier League, have denied reports they have approached the Football Association of Wales about Coleman.

However, it is understood discussions about filling the vacant manager's position are beginning, with the club hopeful of having Bradley's replacement in place prior to the trip to Crystal Palace on 3 January.

Alan Curtis, who is taking temporary charge of the team, believes the club's next manager should be British and have experience of the Premier League.

"It has to be the right man. Ideally they would be British and know the Premier League," Curtis said.

"[The owners] have to be satisfied he fills all the criteria for getting us out of the trouble we find ourselves in."

Swans legend Curtis, who is preparing for Saturday's home game with Bournemouth, says he has spoken to chairman Huw Jenkins but does not know how long he will be in charge.

"We will take it on a day by day basis," he continued.

"What the club needs is not a change of direction. The club has been the club and the way we run the club is the way that suits us.

"Somebody needs to come in with our philosophy with a little bit of experience and perhaps look at it with fresh eyes. That's exactly what it needs."

Coleman still a contender?

Former Swansea player Coleman was thought to be top of the club's wanted list, but he has repeatedly committed himself to staying as Wales manager as he tries to lead the national team to the World Cup finals in Russia in 2018.

Coleman is yet to comment on speculation he could take the job but on Thursday, his wife Charlotte hinted on social media that he might have other 

Curtis offered a light-hearted response to the tweet.

"Abroad is Wales. They are living in England. Across the Severn Bridge and down to Mumbles, she loves the Mumbles. I've seen them both down here looking at houses," he said.

"Chris is obviously a Swansea boy. It is all speculation at the moment, we are all grasping at everything. I genuinely don't know. Huw is not giving anything away.

"I have not spoken to the new owners. All we can do is prepare for Saturday and if it goes a little further we can prepare as normal."

Manchester United ended a run of four Premier League games without a win as they made light work of a feeble Swansea City side.

United dominated from the start and were 3-0 up at half-time thanks to Paul Pogba's stunning volley and two goals for Zlatan Ibrahimovic - his first in the league since September.

Mike van der Hoorn headed in for Swansea midway through the second half but there was no real danger for the visitors, whose manager Jose Mourinho watched from the stands because of a touchline ban.

United climb up to sixth in the table, while a 10th Premier League match without victory means Swansea remain second from bottom.

The Swans' dismal performance prompted boos from the home crowd and left manager Bob Bradley with just one point from his first four games in charge.

But for Mourinho, a second win in eight league matches comes as welcome relief following a difficult few weeks.

Ibrahimovic and United back in the groove

Although he was banished to the stands, Mourinho made his presence felt with six changes from Thursday's Europa League defeat at Fenerbahce.

One of those recalled was Ibrahimovic, whose attitude Mourinho had praised as "brilliant" despite a barren spell which had seen the Swede fail to score in six Premier League games.

Happily for Ibrahimovic and United, they faced a ramshackle Swansea defence in charitable mood.

While Pogba's exquisite volley would have beaten any goalkeeper, Ibrahimovic's low drive only found its way to the net because it was met with such weak resistance from Swansea keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Mourinho could sit back and relax as his side controlled the match with embarrassing ease; Pogba, Wayne Rooney and Ibrahimovic all rediscovering their form to torment their abject opponents.

Ibrahimovic's second goal was a microcosm of the match as he brushed aside Angel Rangel's untidy challenge before clipping the ball beyond Fabianski.

Theo Walcott scored twice as 10-man Arsenal won their sixth Premier League game in a row, despite a spirited Swansea City display in Bob Bradley's first match as manager.

Gunners and England forward Walcott now has five goals in eight games, taking advantage of a heavy Jordi Amat touch for his first and a poor Jack Cork header for his second.

The Swans looked dejected after the quick-fire double, though Gylfi Sigurdsson pounced on a Granit Xhaka error to curl in and give them hope before the break.

Mesut Ozil volleyed in an Alexis Sanchez cross to restore a two-goal lead for the hosts, but substitute Borja Baston tapped in a cross from the impressive Modou Barrow to set up a tense finale.

Arsenal saw Xhaka sent off for a petulant trip and despite seeing Walcott squander two late chances, they held on as Swansea equalled their worst start to a league season.

The Welsh side are in the bottom three and winless since the opening day of the season - but it would be wrong to be overly negative about this display.

In truth, they had not been stretched by their hosts early on and it was two defensive lapses which left them with a mountain to climb.

Walcott was on hand from close range to punish them and he has now scored as many goals in eight outings as he did in all 28 of his Premier League appearances last season.

The 27-year-old has only ever reached double figures once in a league season, scoring 14 times in the 2012-13 campaign.

But he seemed hungry in front of goal, with six shots - a game high - and showed instinct to sense Amat would have difficulty dealing with a bouncing ball, allowing him to prod home.

Walcott's approach play was also sharp - completing 92% of his passes - and he worked hard too, with only Santi Cazorla and Hector Bellerin covering more ground for Arsene Wenger's side.

Late on he missed two one-on-one chances for his hat-trick, the first of which saw him strike the post and watch as the ball rolled agonisingly back across the goalline.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "I have some mixed feelings because it looked at some points comfortable and then it never was.

"We finished with good solidarity and we made it over the line."

Swansea manager Bob Bradley: "That game had many different parts. We started poorly. Defensively the first two goals were not handled well, but we gave ourselves a real chance.

"We are confident we can turn this around. After the week of training we have just had and the mentality of the team, for me we are going to become a good team."

James Milner's late penalty gave Liverpool a hard-fought victory over Swansea, increasing the scrutiny on Swans boss Francesco Guidolin.

Milner netted the winner six minutes from time after Firmino was fouled.

The Liverpool midfielder's goal was just reward a dominant second half from his team, who have now won four Premier League games in a row.

It was, however, a little cruel on Swansea, whose spirited performance has probably bought Guidolin a little more time to turn things around.

The Swans remain one point above the relegation zone and have not won in the league since the opening day of the season.

But the club's owners had indicated before the game that the manner of performances would have as much of a bearing on Guidolin's future as the results.

Swansea boss Francesco Guidolin:

"The players gave me a good answer. Our relationship is good. There is no problem between me and my players.

"I don't know [about the future]. It's not my decision. It's just for me to prepare for the game and the team. I know the situation. It's a possibility. The important thing is to prepare with patience.

"Before the game I saw the new owners Jason [Levien] and Steve [Kaplan] just to say 'hello'. I don't know if in the next day there's meeting."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp:

"I thought we could have done better in the first half. Our body language was not good, we were static and it was easy to defend against us. We are not as good as we should have been.

"You have to show why we are here. We showed a reaction, were more organised, clear in all situations and we deserved to win. Of course I am happy we have had two or three brilliant games in a row.

"If Milner is our top scorer at end of the season with penalties, I have no problem with it. All is good. The performance was not perfect but it was good enough."

Diego Costa has scored more goals - seven - against Swansea than against any other side in the Premier League

Chelsea dropped their first points of the Premier League season as Diego Costa struck twice to rescue a draw in a feisty encounter at Swansea City.

Costa, who could have been sent off, capitalised on poor defending to fire the dominant visitors into the lead.

But Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty and Leroy Fer's bundled goal two minutes later turned the game on its head.

Costa scored an acrobatic late second to salvage a point for Antonio Conte's team, who stay second in the table.

Conte was aiming to become the fourth Chelsea manager to win his first four Premier League games in charge, joining Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti.

The visitors enjoyed total control for almost an hour before imploding with the concession of two goals in three second-half minutes, the second coming after defender Gary Cahill of possession by Fer near the edge of his own box.

But Costa's brace at least protects the Italian's unbeaten record, with Chelsea - who ended the game with their captain John Terry appearing to be injured - now two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Confrontational Costa

Having limped to 10th place last season, Chelsea had started this campaign with a swagger befitting genuine title contenders.

Costa had embodied that turnaround with two goals in his first three league games, and he was at his snarling best at the Liberty Stadium.

The Spain striker clashed with Swansea's defenders on several occasions and was booked for a clumsy challenge on Federico Fernandez, whose mistake Costa ruthlessly punished for the opening goal.

The Argentine defender hesitantly headed the ball to Oscar, whose pass allowed Costa to score with a clinical low finish.

Costa could have been dismissed against West Ham on the opening weekend before going on to net the winner - and he lived on the edge again against the Swans.

It was a small wonder he and Jordi Amat both stayed on the pitch having bickered throughout the game, and Costa was perhaps fortunate to escape a second yellow card for what appeared to be a dive under pressure from Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski in the second half.

But as he usually does, Costa relished the confrontation and he proved Chelsea's saviour as he equalised with a bicycle kick after 81 minutes.

Swansea's controversial revival

Having lost their previous two fixtures, the Swans were staring at the prospect of suffering three successive defeats under Francesco Guidolin for the first time.

In what appeared to be an attempt at damage limitation, the Italian switched to a defensive 5-4-1 formation with a compact midfield diamond aimed at containing Chelsea.

Those efforts were in vain as the Swans were initially overrun and outclassed by their rampant opponents.

Guidolin abandoned his new system after just 41 minutes, with Wales left-back Neil Taylor dismayed as he was sacrificed for winger Modou Barrow.

The bold move paid dividends as Swansea staged a remarkable second-half revival.

They were awarded a penalty when Sigurdsson was tripped by a stranded Thibaout Courtois, who was the beneficiary of a rule change which means players are only booked rather than sent off if they are deemed to have only accidentally denied their opponent a goalscoring opportunity.

Sigurdsson confidently converted the spot-kick, and the fans had barely had time to catch their breath before the next controversy.

Fer appeared to foul Cahill as he dispossessed the Chelsea defender, and Swansea's Netherlands midfielder ran clear before squeezing his shot past Courtois and over the line.

'It's a big mistake' - what the managers said

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte: "It's very difficult to talk about the game because we lost two points. We were leading 1-0 and created a lot of chances to score another goal. We are disappointed because the performance was very good in terms of our intensity and because we played good football.

"People looking at the second goal can see that the referee made a mistake - but this can happen. I've not spoken to the referee. It's a big mistake."

Swansea boss Francesco Guidolin: "I am happy with the result. My team played the second half with more energy against a very strong team.

"After Chelsea's first goal I saw my team not playing well and decided to change something before the end of the first half. I am sorry for Neil Taylor [getting substituted] but I decided this way because we needed a reaction."

What next?

Chelsea's burgeoning title credentials will be tested by their next two games, at home to Liverpool and away against Arsenal.

Swansea, meanwhile, face a daunting sequence of fixtures - a trip to Southampton followed by home matches against Manchester City and Liverpool and then a visit to Arsenal.
