Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Aston Villa FA Cup Match Result and Highlight

⚽ Spurs overcome stubborn Villa to reach round four.

DBliss Media Sport

After a great win against Chelsea in the Premier League, Tottenham ease through a a stubborn Aston Villa side on Sunday with a  victory.

After a loathsome first-half appearing, Spurs improved and the Wales left-back found the leap forward against their Championship opponents with a deft header.

Son Heung-min then wrapped up the triumph when he changed over Moussa Sissoko's pass to put Spurs in Monday's fourth-round draw.

The hosts were shy of thoughts and the tie looked destined for a match replay until far-fetched goalscorer Davies touched base inside the penalty area.

Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea Premier League Match Results and Highlight

⚽ Alli stars as Spurs end Chelsea's 13-match winning streak

DBlis Media Sports
Dele Alli's ninth and 10th Premier League goals of the season proved enough to end Chelsea's winning run.
Tottenham ended Chelsea's attempt to make Premier League history with a 14th successive victory as the title pacesetters were well beaten at White Hart Lane.

Spurs moved up to third place as headers from Dele Alli either side of half-time made the difference to leave Chelsea five points ahead of Liverpool in second place.

Alli rose to meet Christian Eriksen's cross in first-half stoppage time and the same pair combined to put the game out of Chelsea's reach in the 54th minute.

Eden Hazard had Chelsea's two best chances in each half but Spurs closed out the victory in comfort to put north London rivals Arsenal out of the top four and leave themselves seven points off the top after their fifth successive league win.

Spurs on the march?

Spurs have won five straight games in the Premier League
Tottenham's season was at a tipping point after a disappointing Champions League exit at the group stage and the poor performance in defeat at Manchester United in early December - but they have responded magnificently.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are gathering impressive momentum, illustrated by the manner in which they overcame a Chelsea side that was starting to carry an air of impregnability.

The 4-1 wins at Southampton and Watford served as a warning that Spurs were approaching the sort of form that carried them close to the title last season and this performance confirmed their growing confidence and stature.

Spurs have recaptured their intensity and energy and when this is bolted on to the quality provided here by the likes of Alli and Eriksen, it makes them a formidable prospect.

Manchester City had already found Spurs too hot to handle at White Hart Lane this season - and Chelsea suffered a similar fate.

Alli delivers the goods

Alli's first (left) and second (right) goals were remarkably similar efforts

Alli endured a quiet start to the season, perhaps in the aftermath of England's debacle at Euro 2016 - but the 20-year-old is firing on cylinders now.

Alli's headed double here made it seven goals his last four games, the third time in succession he has scored twice in a game after doing the same at Southampton and Watford.

Pochettino said before the game that he regarded Alli as "the most important player to emerge in English football in recent years".

And here the £5m signing from MK Dons backed up his manager's confident words with a consummate all-round display crowned by the two towering headers which proved decisive.

Alli received a standing ovation when he was replaced in the closing minutes after showing the quality that will make him an integral part of the future of both Spurs and England.

Chelsea still in pole position

Diego Costa and Pedro had a sharp exchange of views in the first half
Chelsea's perfectionist manager Antonio Conte and his players will be bitterly disappointed they could not achieve Premier League history with a 14th successive win that would have matched the mark set across the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons by Arsenal.

However they remain in prime position in the title race.

They still have a healthy five-point lead over Liverpool in second place and have come a long way since their last Premier League defeat at Arsenal on 24 September, a 3-0 loss that left them eight points adrift of then-leaders Manchester City in eighth place.

Conte has transformed the mood around the team and the club and while their superb run may be at an end, this is a team fully equipped to go the distance in the title race.

"A massive victory" - manager quotes

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino: "It is a massive victory, a very important three points to reduce the gap at the top of the table. It was a very tough game, we were playing one of the best teams in Europe, so the value of the victory is massive.

"It makes us very proud and we showed character and were competitive. It is one step forward for the team and is important to keep going. Football is about belief.

"We have shown we can challenge for the big things. We are in a good position, Chelsea is in a very good position, but we are fighting to get points and to reduce the gap above us."

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte: "I saw a game with a great balance. It is not easy to play against Tottenham. But we played with a good personality to create the chances to score a goal, but we could not take them.

"It is strange for us to concede these goals because we are defending well, and they are in a crucial moment. At the end of the first half and then in the second half after we miss the chances to score, but this can happen.

"We must work hard and be pleased with our position in the table, but know this league is tough until the end for the Champions League, for the title."

What's next?

Tottenham play Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Sunday before resuming their league campaign at home to West Brom on Saturday 14 January.

Chelsea take on Peterborough in the FA Cup on Sunday before travelling to defending Premier League champions Leicester six days later.

Southampton 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Match Results and Highlights

⚽ Alli scores twice as Spurs beat 10-man Saints

DBliss Media Sports
Dele Alli scored his 15th goal in 50 league games for Tottenham

Dele Alli scored twice as Tottenham maintained their challenge for a Champions League spot with victory over 10-man Southampton.

Saints took the lead in the second minute when defender Virgil van Dijk demonstrated his aerial threat by nodding in James Ward-Prowse's free-kick.

The visitors were level just before midway in the half when Alli out-jumped Van Dijk to direct Moussa Sissoko's deflected cross past keeper Fraser Forster.

Shortly after the break, Harry Kane ended his run of three league games without a goal when he headed in from Christian Eriksen's corner in the 52nd minute.

And the England forward should have extended his side's advantage moments later when Southampton's Nathan Redmond brought down Alli in the area to concede a penalty and earn a red card. However Kane fired the spot-kick over the bar.

The sending off changed the complexion of the match as Spurs took advantage of the extra space, with both substitute Son Heung-Min and Alli firing in low strikes to put gloss on the win.

Spurs remain in fifth spot, but are now only a point behind fourth-place Arsenal.

Match Highlights
Was it a red card?

There was confusion on social media as to whether Redmond's foul on Alli warranted a red card in the 57th minute.

The Saints midfielder pulled back his Spurs counterpart in the area which prompted referee Mike Dean to point to the spot. The official then, after a delay, sent the England Under-21 international off.

Under new rules, had Redmond tried to win the ball with a tackle he would have received just a caution. However, the pull meant it was both a penalty and red card offence.

Kane & Alli send message to rivals

Harry Kane stares at the loose turf after firing his second-half spot-kick over the bar

The England internationals scored 35 league goals between them last season as Spurs finished third - and they are on course to emulate that feat this campaign.

Alli led the way against what was the third meanest defence in the league coming into the match.

He brought Spurs back into the contest with a majestic leap above 6ft 4in Van Dijk to nod Sissoko's delivery past Forster. And showed composure to fire past the England keeper in the closing minutes.

Kane had the second fewest touches of all outfield players in the first half, but after the break the 23-year-old scored with his first effort on target when he headed in from Eriksen's set-piece in the 52nd minute.

He should have added his ninth league goal of the season soon after but his standing foot slipped as he fired over from the penalty spot.

After the match, Kane suggested a brand new square of turf on the penalty spot might have been the cause for his miss.

What's next?

Southampton are at home to West Brom on Saturday (15:00 GMT) and Tottenham are at Watford on New Year's Day (13:30 GMT).

Tottenham 2-1 Burnley Premier League Match Results and Highlights ( Tottenham edge past Burnley to close in on top four)

DBliss Media Sports
Danny Rose scored his second league goal of the season for Tottenham
Danny Rose scored the winner as Tottenham controversially came from behind to beat lowly Burnley in the Premier League.

Substitute Moussa Sissoko was given only a yellow card for a high, late challenge on Stephen Ward, before putting Rose through on goal in the next move, as the full-back smashed home at the near post.

Spurs were punished for a sloppy start as they failed to clear the ball, allowing Ashley Barnes to poke in the opener.

Prior to the goal, Dele Alli had struck the post from close range, before the midfielder restored parity by converting Kyle Walker's low cross.

Sissoko's contentious cameo
  • 62 minutes: Replaces Mousa Dembele.
  • 69 minutes: Catches Ward on the knee with a right-footed, studs-high challenge.
  • 70 minutes: Breaks clear to the edge of the box before feeding Rose for the winner.

Burnley will rightly feel aggrieved as they were hanging on for an away point, with Spurs struggling to break their defence down in the second half until Sissoko's intervention.

As referee Kevin Friend saw the incident and took action, no retrospective disciplinary case can be brought against the Frenchman by the Football Association.
Full-backs show the way forward

Despite falling behind, Mauricio Pochettino's side dominated a match in which they had 30 shots at goal, forcing Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton into seven saves.

The England international saved well off Harry Kane and Victor Wanyama, and dived full stretch to his right to keep out Christian Eriksen's drive.

Tottenham continued to pressurise their opponents down the flanks, and it was the home side's two full-backs who proved to be the difference.

Walker got forward to provide the assist for Alli's equaliser, while Rose - who put in more crosses than any other player on the pitch - found himself in the opposition area for the second goal.

Victory leaves Spurs in fifth place in the table, but only one point behind rivals Arsenal, who lost 2-1 at Manchester City.

Man United 1-0 Tottenham Premier League Results & Highlights (Mkhitaryan first half strike the difference)

DBliss Media
Henrikh Mkhitaryan became the first Armenian to score in the Premier League, taking the league's total goalscoring nationalities to 96
Henrikh Mkhitaryan's first Premier League goal gave Manchester United victory over top-four rivals Tottenham.

United, still six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, led when Mkhitaryan raced on to Ander Herrera's through ball and hammered into the roof of the net.

EPL Table As It Stands

Victor Wanyama should have levelled with a header from six yards out, although visitors Spurs created few chances despite plenty of possession.

Paul Pogba almost made it more comfortable for Jose Mourinho's side when he hit a free-kick against the post, but United ended a run of three games without a win in the league.

The game ended in disappointment for Mkhitaryan, who was taken off on a stretcher with an ankle injury in the final 10 minutes at Old Trafford and has been ruled out until Boxing Day.

Spurs missed the chance to replace Manchester City in fourth and remain fifth, three points above United.

MATCH HIGHLIGHT

It was all lined up to be the perfect afternoon for Mkhitaryan, who has turned around his fortunes at Old Trafford since joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

The 27-year-old, who became the first Armenian to score in the Premier League, had started only one league match in his first four months at the club.

But Mourinho has brought him back into the fold and the result was two goals in as many games for the forward, following a strike in Thursday's Europa League win over Zorya.

Mkhitaryan's revival may have been cruelly cut short, however, after he was carried off the pitch following a challenge by Danny Rose.

Mourinho said the injury was not serious and expects him to be back for the Premier League match at home to Sunderland on Boxing Day.

The Armenian's absence could open up a return to the side for Wayne Rooney, who was an unused substitute, while Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata could also be options.

The only other negative for United was the booing from some supporters of Marouane Fellaini while the Belgium midfielder was warming up to come on as a stoppage-time substitute.

Fellaini conceded the late penalty from which Everton equalised last week, moments after he had come off the bench.

Man of the match - Ander Herrera (Manchester United)

Midfielder Herrera was the driving force behind most of Manchester United's attacks, making five key passes in the game, including the assist for Mkhitaryan's goal
What's next?

Both sides will find out who they will face in the last 32 of the Europa League when the draw is made on Monday.

After that, Manchester United travel to Crystal Palace on Wednesday, while Tottenham host Hull City on the same day (both at 20:00 GMT).

Monaco 2-1 Tottenham UCL Match Highlights (Spurs are out of the Champions League)

Monaco 2-1 Tottenham
Djibril Sidibe and Radamel Falcao celebrate Monaco's opening goal
Tottenham were knocked out of the Champions League as they were comprehensively outclassed by Monaco at Stade Louis II.

Djibril Sidibe's header early in the second half sparked a stunning sequence of three goals in just five minutes that saw Spurs' Champions League hopes swiftly fade, grow and fade again.

Harry Kane's penalty, awarded when Dele Alli was pulled back, put Spurs on level terms but, just 39 seconds later, Monaco had the ball in the net again through Thomas Lemar.

UCL Table For Group E As It Stands

Victory takes Monaco through to the last 16 as deserved winners of Group E ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who earlier drew 1-1 at CSKA Moscow.

Tottenham, who have won just one of their five group matches, are three points behind Leverkusen with one game to play, against CSKA on 7 December, but cannot overhaul the German side because of an inferior head-to-head record.

Spurs knew a draw would be enough to keep their hopes alive, but Monaco were by far the better side and only a superb performance by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris - who saved a penalty from Radamel Falcao - spared the Premier League side further punishment.

MATCH HIGHLIGHT

The Ligue 1 title hopefuls cut through Spurs with ease from the outset, with full-backs Sidibe and Benjamin Mendy a constant menace. Spurs defender Kevin Wimmer had a night to forget, but it was centre-back partner Eric Dier at fault for Monaco's first-half penalty, lunging in clumsily on Fabinho. Falcao took the spot-kick, but his effort was tame and Lloris saved. The French goalkeeper also made a double save from Mendy and Valere Germain but had no chance with Monaco's opener, the hosts again working the ball with ease to the left flank, from where Mendy crossed for the unmarked Sidibe to head in.

Kane's penalty four minutes later was the England striker's first Champions League goal, but Spurs' defensive frailties were again exposed straight from kick-off. Monaco required just four passes as they worked the ball seamlessly into the area, where Lemar drilled low past Lloris. Only a quite incredible save from Lloris to keep out Kamil Glik's thunderous strike kept Monaco within touching distance, but a third goal - or indeed a fourth - would not have flattered Leonardo Jardim's hosts.

Reaction: 'A schoolboy error'

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino on BT Sport: "We are out and we have time to assess and analyse. It is true we feel disappointed but today we missed opportunities.

"I think we made too many mistakes at home at Wembley. We don't deserve to go through to the next round because we didn't show enough quality.

"We will take many things from this defeat, you learn and improve every day. Now we are trying to reduce the gap on the teams above us in the Premier League."

Tottenham striker Harry Kane on BT Sport: "It is disappointing. We got ourselves back in the game at 1-1 and it was schoolboy to concede straight after that.

"We had to try to grind out a win because we were not great - the second goal took the stuffing out of us. I just don't think on the day we were good enough.

"I'm gutted - we wanted to go far but it is something we will have to deal with. Losing two of our home games in this competition - yes, we played at Wembley this year but it has to be a fortress at home.

"We will look back and say it was the home games were we should've been better."

What's next?

Spurs return to Premier League action with a huge game at leaders Chelsea on Saturday (17:30 GMT), while they complete their Champions League group campaign against CSKA Moscow on 7 December (19:45). Monaco are in Ligue 1 action on Saturday, welcoming Marseille to Stade Louis II.

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur Highlights (Kane earns Spurs derby draw with Arsenal) #AFCvTHFC

Here's Dembele being brought down in the box at the end of a great run
Harry Kane marked his return from injury after seven weeks with the equaliser that keeps Tottenham as the only unbeaten team in the Premier League after a north London derby draw at Arsenal.

The England striker has been sidelined since 18 September with an ankle injury but was on target from the penalty spot early in the second half after Kevin Wimmer's own goal three minutes before the interval gave Arsenal the advantage.

Match Highlights

The Gunners knew victory would put them top of the table and Theo Walcott almost put them ahead, crashing a shot against the post, before Wimmer glanced Mesut Ozil's free-kick past his own keeper Hugo Lloris.

Spurs responded well with Kane's spot-kick after Laurent Koscielny tangled with Mousa Dembele They then threatened to take all three points, Christian Eriksen forcing a fine save from Petr Cech before his angled free-kick bounced back off the post in the closing minutes.

Arsenal miss their chance?

Arsenal could have gone top of the Premier League with victory here - moving ahead of Chelsea and Manchester City - and all the omens seemed good for them.

The Gunners were in prime form - they remain unbeaten since the season's opening day - and faced a Spurs side in reduced circumstances, without a win in six games and missing the influence of injured defender Toby Alderweireld and midfielder Dele Alli.

With Kane also returning after a seven-week absence, Arsenal would have entered this north London derby high on optimism - and yet had to settle for a draw.

Arsenal were pushed on to the back foot for the first 20 minutes but then exerted their authority to lead by half-time, only to be knocked off track by the concession of that cheap penalty.

The Gunners still showed plenty of grit but in the end they did not possess enough guile to unlock a resolute Spurs defence, who held out in relative comfort for a point.
Pochettino will be more satisfied than Wenger

It may seem strange to suggest, but spirits appeared low at Spurs despite the fact they entered this game as the only unbeaten team left in the Premier League.

Spurs were on an indifferent run after a superb 2-0 win against Manchester City in early October and their Champions League campaign is in real danger of fizzling out after that second Wembley defeat in the group stage against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Kane had not played for Spurs since 18 September but stepped up to calmly stroke in the leveller
They left Emirates Stadium in better heart after a strong performance and the return of their main marksman Kane, who looked dangerous, albeit short of full match fitness.

Spurs overcame the loss of important players to fully deserve their point and the manner in which they responded to conceding that unfortunate own goal just before half-time will have left Mauricio Pochettino more satisfied than counterpart Arsene Wenger.

What they said:

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is disappointing to drop two points at home. We created plenty of chances in dangerous situations.

"In the second half we looked more laboured, there were plenty of aspects I did not like, the desire was there but we were too nervous.

"We lacked what we are strong at; the fluency of movement, vision around the box. We usually play better from the back, there was a lot missing.

"Spurs go home happy, we go home and are not happy. We wanted to win the game, but overall it is not mathematically a disaster."

On the Spurs penalty: "From the outside it looked a very soft penalty, I was surprised."

Kane equalised through a penalty
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a strong performance from my team. Arsenal were on a good run, our players deserve full credit, they were fantastic.

"They played well, we created some chances to win the game, it was very competitive and good to see."

On Arsenal's opener: "Some people say to me it is offside, it is unlucky but we showed big character, we didn't suffer, we started the second half well, deserved the penalty and scored."

On Harry Kane's return: "I am happy with Harry Kane, it is tough after not playing for a few months,. I am happy he is back, it is important for the team to feel one of our best players is available."

What's next?

Arsenal play away to Manchester United in a 12:30 GMT kick-off on Saturday, 19 November after the international break.

Tottenham welcome West Ham in a 17:30 GMT start later that day.
