Enner Valencia (centre) made a key impact after coming on as a substitute
Everton boss Ronald Koeman enjoyed a win over former club Southampton thanks to goals from Enner Valencia, Leighton Baines and Romelu Lukaku.

The match had lacked quality and chances until substitute Valencia scored his first goal for the club, driving in a shot from close range after Lukaku's header had been saved.

Valencia was also involved in the second goal as he won a penalty when he was fouled by Maya Yoshida.

Baines stepped up to score calmly from the spot before Lukaku latched on to a Tom Davies pass and smashed a shot into the top corner.

Everton stay seventh, while ninth-placed Southampton lost a third Premier League game in succession.

Islamic State claims Istanbul attack, gunman remains at large

Islamic State claimed responsibility on Monday for a New Year's Day mass shooting in a packed Istanbul nightclub that killed 39 people, an attack carried out by a lone gunman who remains at large.

It described the Reina nightclub, where many foreigners as well as Turks were killed, as a gathering point for Christians celebrating their "apostate holiday". The attack, it said, was revenge for Turkish military involvement in Syria.

"The apostate Turkish government should know that the blood of Muslims shed with airplanes and artillery fire will, with God's permission, ignite a fire in their own land," the Islamic State declaration said.

There was no immediate comment from Turkish officials.

The jihadist group has been blamed for at least half a dozen attacks on civilian targets in Turkey over the past 18 months but, other than targeted assassinations, this is the first time it has directly claimed any of them. It made the statement on one of its Telegram channels, a method used after attacks elsewhere.

NATO member Turkey is part of the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State and launched an incursion into neighboring Syria in August to drive the radical Sunni militants from its borders, sending in tanks and special forces backed by fighter jets.

Nationals of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Lebanon, Libya, Israel, India, a Turkish-Belgian dual citizen and a Franco-Tunisian woman were among those killed at the exclusive nightclub on the shores of the Bosphorus waterway. Twenty-five of the dead were foreigners, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Police distributed a hazy black-and-white photo of the alleged gunman taken from security footage. State broadcaster TRT Haber said eight people had been detained in Istanbul.

The authorities believe the attacker may be from a Central Asian nation and suspect he had links to Islamic State, the Hurriyet newspaper said. It said he may be from the same cell responsible for a gun-and-bomb attack on Istanbul's main airport in June, in which 45 people were killed and hundreds wounded.

The attack at Reina, popular with Turkish celebrities and wealthy visitors, shook Turkey as it tries to recover from a failed July coup and a series of deadly bombings in Istanbul and elsewhere, some blamed on Islamic State, others claimed by Kurdish militants.

Around 600 people were thought to be inside when the gunman shot dead a policeman and civilian at the door, forcing his way in then opening fire with an automatic assault rifle. Witnesses said he shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest).

Some at the club jumped into the Bosphorus after the attacker began shooting at random just over an hour into the new year. Witnesses described diving under tables as he walked around spraying bullets.

KALASHNIKOV IN SUITCASE

The attacker was believed to have taken a taxi from the southern Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul and, because of the busy traffic, got out and walked the last four minutes to the entrance of the nightclub, newspaper Haberturk said.

He pulled his Kalashnikov rifle from a suitcase at the side of the road, opened fire on those at the door, then threw two hand grenades after entering, Haberturk said, without citing its sources. It said six empty magazines were found at the scene and that he was estimated to have fired at least 180 bullets.

Security services had been on alert across Europe for new year celebrations following an attack on a Christmas market in Berlin that killed 12 people. Only days ago, an online message from a pro-Islamic State group called for attacks by "lone wolves" on "celebrations, gatherings and clubs".

In a statement hours after the shooting, President Tayyip Erdogan said such attacks aimed to create chaos and destabilize the country.

Four months into its operation in Syria, the Turkish army and the rebels it backs are besieging the Islamic State-held town of al-Bab. Erdogan has said he wants them to continue to Raqqa, the jihadists' Syrian stronghold.

Turkey has also been cracking down on Islamic State networks at home. In counter-terrorism operations between Dec 26-Jan 2, Turkish police detained 147 people over links to the group and formally arrested 25 of them, the interior ministry said.

The New Year's Day attack came five months after a failed military coup, in which more than 240 people were killed, many of them in Istanbul, as rogue soldiers commandeered tanks and fighter jets in a bid to seize power.

More than 100,000 people, including soldiers and police officers, have been sacked or suspended in a subsequent crackdown ordered by Erdogan, raising concern both about civic rights and the effectiveness of Turkey's security apparatus.

The government says the purges will make the military, police and other institutions more disciplined and effective.

Turkey has seen repeated attacks in recent weeks. On Dec. 10, two bombs claimed by Kurdish militants exploded outside a soccer stadium in Istanbul, killing 44 people. A security guard who survived that attack was killed at Reina.

A car bomb killed at least 13 soldiers and wounded 56 when it ripped through a bus carrying off-duty military personnel in the central city of Kayseri a week later, an attack Erdogan also blamed on Kurdish militants.

Islamic State's Amaq website said the group was behind a car bomb attack that killed 11 people and wounded 100 in the city of Diyarbakir in November, but Turkish authorities denied this and said Kurdish militants carried out the attack.

The Russian ambassador to Turkey was shot dead as he gave a speech in Ankara on Dec. 19 by an off-duty police officer who shouted "Don't forget Aleppo" and "Allahu Akbar".

Manchester City 2-1 Burnley Premier League Match Results and Highlights

⚽ Aguero strikes as 10-man Man City beat Burnley

Aguero came off the bench to score the winner
Ten-man Manchester City moved up to third as they withstood a spirited Burnley fightback in front of a relieved Etihad Stadium.

Fernandinho was dismissed towards the end of an even first half for a two-footed challenge on Johan Gudmundsson.

But the hosts improved after the break as Gael Clichy squeezed home a shot before Sergio Aguero, on as a substitute, fired home from a tight angle.

Ben Mee smashed home via the underside of the bar shortly after but Burnley could not force a leveller despite a fine chance for Andre Gray late on.

Match Highlights
City take the hard road

Beginning the day 10 points behind leaders Chelsea, anything less than victory would have prompted some to begin reading the last rites on City's title challenge.

As it is, Pep Guardiola's side will look at the league table with renewed optimism as they closed to within four points of second-place Liverpool with one and possibly both of Chelsea and Tottenham to drop points when they face each other on Wednesday.

However, Fernandinho's dismissal meant they had to fight harder than they might have expected for victory.

The City captain took some of the ball as he contested a 50:50 ball in midfield, but his reckless scissor-action style meant that Lee Mason's could easily justify his decision to show red.

It is not the first time City's discipline has hindered their title ambitions. Including Sergio Aguero's retrospective red against West Ham, they have been shown seven red cards in Guardiola's 30 games in charge.

Sunderland 2-2 Liverpool Premier League Match Results and Highlights

⚽ Defoe scores two penalties as Sunderland hold Liverpool

Jermain Defoe has scored 11 of Sunderland's 19 Premier League goals this season
Two Jermain Defoe penalties meant Sunderland twice came from behind to earn a point against second-placed Liverpool.

The Reds took a deserved lead when Daniel Sturridge flicked in a header after Dejan Lovren's mishit shot.
EPL Table As It Stands

Sunderland equalised six minutes later as Defoe scored from the spot following Ragnar Klavan's trip on Didier Ndong, before Sadio Mane put the visitors back ahead with a close-range finish.

However, Mane then handled in his own 18-yard box and Defoe converted the penalty to snatch an unlikely point.

Liverpool's missed opportunity

The result leaves Liverpool five points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, who play their game in hand on Wednesday at Tottenham (20:00 GMT kick-off).

However, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will surely see it as two points dropped after his side led twice, had 71% of the possession and had 15 shots on target.

Only an inspired performance from Black Cats keeper Vito Mannone denied Liverpool further goals, before Mane needlessly stuck out an arm to block Seb Larsson's free-kick, costing his side dearly.

To make things worse for Liverpool, Sturridge, who scored only his second Premier League goal of the season, limped off late on after clashing with Papy Djilobodji.

Manhunt after dozens killed in Istanbul Nightclub attack

Police in Istanbul are hunting for a gunman who opened fire at a well-known nightclub, killing at least 39 people.

The attack happened at Reina nightclub early on Sunday, as hundreds of revellers marked the new year.

Officials say some 15 foreigners were killed, including citizens from Israel, France, Tunisia, Lebanon, India, Belgium, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

The attacker left his gun before "taking advantage of the chaos" and fleeing the scene, Turkey's PM said.

Binali Yildirim also confirmed the gunman was not dressed as Santa Claus, contradicting earlier reports.

The attack unfolded some 75 minutes into the new year as around 700 people gathered in the waterside Reina club, one of Istanbul's most upmarket venues.

The attacker shot dead a policeman and a security guard at the entrance before heading into the club, which is popular with celebrities and foreigners.

Eyewitnesses described seeing dozens of bodies lying on the floor. Some revellers reportedly threw themselves into the Bosphorus to escape the carnage.

"Gunshots rang out. When those sounds were heard, many girls fainted," professional footballer Sefa Boydas told AFP news agency.

He said people appeared to be crushed as they ran away. "They say 35 to 40 died but it's probably more because when I was walking, people were walking on top of people."

Relatives of the victims gathered outside Istanbul's forensic medical centre waiting for news (AP)
At least 69 people are being treated in hospital, officials said, with three in a serious condition.

The motive for the attack is not clear, but suspicion has fallen on the Islamic State group.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed terror groups "trying to create chaos". "They are trying to... demoralise our people and destabilise our country," he said.

The banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) said it was not the work of Kurdish groups. They would "never target innocent civilians", the PKK's Murat Karayilan was quoted as saying.

Details of those who died are starting to emerge.

The security guard at the entrance to the club has been identified as Fatih Cakmak.

His brother said he narrowly escaped a double bombing three weeks ago, having been on duty when Kurdish militants launched an attack near a football stadium, killing at least 44 people, mostly police.

Here is what we know of the other deaths:
  • Israel has confirmed Leanne Nasser, 19, was killed while out celebrating with three friends
  • Three Jordanians are among the dead, Jordan's foreign ministry says
  • The family of Lebanese national Elias Wardini say they have been informed of his death. At least one more Lebanese citizen has reportedly died
  • A French-Tunisian dual national has died, the French foreign ministry confirms
  • Tunisia's foreign ministry said on Facebook that two Tunisians died. It is not clear if one of those includes the French-Tunisian dual national
  • Belgium's foreign ministry confirms a Belgian-Turkish dual national has died
  • India's foreign minister Sushma Swaraj tweets confirmation of the death of two nationals

US President Barack Obama, who is on holiday in Hawaii, offered condolences "for the innocent lives lost" and offered "appropriate assistance".

Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the "cynical" murder of civilians. "Our shared duty is to decisively rebuff terrorist aggression," he said.

Turkey and Russia are working together on efforts to end the fighting in Syria, though they support different sides in the conflict.

Istanbul was already on high alert with some 17,000 police officers on duty in the city, following a string of terror attacks in recent months.

Patriots clinch home-field advantage by beating Dolphins

DBliss Media Sports
New England Patriots wide receiver Michael Floyd (14) celebrates his touchdown, during the first half of an NFL football game against the Miami Dolphins, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, in Miami Gardens, Fla. (AP)

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — With victory assured, Tom Brady watched the New England Patriots' final offensive series from the sideline, good preparation for what's to come.

All of the Patriots will be spectators for the next week, enjoying a bye to start the postseason. And thanks to Sunday's 35-14 victory over Miami , the Patriots (14-2) will be home throughout the AFC playoffs, a reward for their best record since 2010.

"This team showed a lot of mental toughness that they can do it week in and week out at a consistent level," Brady said. "Any team can go 8-8. ... But 14-2 is a tough thing to do. It's very cool for this team to accomplish that."

Brady went 25 for 33 with no turnovers. He finished the regular season with 28 touchdown passes and two interceptions, the highest TD/INT ratio in league history.

He also has 51 career games with at least three touchdown passes and no picks, tying Peyton Manning for most in NFL history.

While the Patriots are playoff perennials, the Dolphins (10-6) are in the postseason for the first time in eight years. Here are things to know about the playoff picture for both teams:

POSTSEASON SCHEDULE: The Dolphins were already locked into an AFC wild-card berth, and they'll be the No. 6 seed next weekend when they play at No. 3 Pittsburgh (11-5), the AFC North champion.

If the Dolphins win, they'll play at New England the weekend of Jan. 14-15.

"Just because you win this last weekend doesn't mean anything two weeks from now," Brady said.

The Dolphins lost both games against New England this season, falling behind 24-0 in the first meeting and 20-0 Sunday.

But they beat the Steelers 30-15 in Week 6.

"I'm pretty sure they feel like they've gotten better," Miami safety Michael Thomas said.

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is one of the few players on the Dolphins' young roster with playoff experience.

"This is my third time in the playoffs, and I just know the feeling going into games — very, very intense," Suh said. "Through the roof."

When they start, the Patriots will be watching and resting. They're a No. 1 seed for the sixth time since 1990, most in the NFL.

"It's good to be in this position, and try to take advantage of this time off and get some good things accomplished, and be ready to play our best football whenever we play," Brady said.

NEWCOMER: The Patriots' Michael Floyd seems poised to play a significant role in the playoffs, even though he has been with the team less than three weeks. Floyd had a 14-yard touchdown catch, and a crushing downfield block that sprang Julian Edelman on a 77-yard touchdown reception.

"That block was a big play for us," tight end Martellus Bennett said. "That's an extra 50 yards, because Julian's not that fast."

The touchdown was Floyd's first with the Patriots. He was claimed off waivers Dec. 15 after the Cardinals released him following a DUI arrest in Arizona.

"I'm in a good place," Floyd said. "I'm not looking back at the past. It's all about moving forward, and I'm glad that I'm here and the people around me. I feel wanted, and that's a good feeling."

TANNEHILL TIME?: Dolphins coach Adam Gase declined to say whether starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill might return for the playoffs. Matt Moore is 2-1 as a starter filling in for Tannehill, who is recovering from a strained left knee.

FIERY LANDRY: Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry had nine catches for 76 yards to finish the season with 94 for 1,136. He bounced off a linebacker to score on an 8-yard catch, then spiked his helmet and drew a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

NOT SUPER, MARIO: Miami's Mario Williams was inactive, capping a disappointing regular season for the four-time Pro Bowl defensive end. He battled injuries and had only 1½ sacks after signing a $17 million, two-year deal.

Arsenal 2-0 Crystal Palace Premier League Match Results and Highlights

⚽ Arsenal third after Giroud 'scorpion' goal

DBliss Media Sports
Olivier Giroud scored his second goal in as many games
Olivier Giroud's incredible scorpion kick set Arsenal on the way to a victory over Crystal Palace which moved them up to third in the Premier League.

With a cross from Alexis Sanchez delivered behind him, Frenchman Giroud elastically reached the ball with his left foot, looping it over his head and in off the underside of the bar.

An Alex Iwobi header gave Arsenal a scrappy second before Palace briefly rallied to force saves from home goalkeeper Petr Cech.

The win moves the Gunners back to within nine points of leaders Chelsea, while Palace stay 17th, two points above the relegation zone.

The visitors have won only once in 13 league games, with manager Sam Allardyce awaiting his first victory since taking over from Alan Pardew.

Giroud's magnificent moment of magic

Giroud was about 12 yards from goal when he applied his sensational finish to Sanchez's cross
Match Highlights

Giroud marked his return to the Arsenal starting line-up on Boxing Day by scoring the only goal in the win over West Bromwich Albion, and followed up here by pulling off one of the most memorable moments of this or any other season.

Indeed, it was made all the more remarkable for its echoes of a similarly breathtaking goal scored by Manchester United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the defeat of Sunderland on Monday.

If anything, Giroud's was even more impressive, an acrobatic finish to a head-high cross delivered from the left by Sanchez at the end of a pacy Arsenal counter-attack.

As the ball arrived, a sprinting Giroud turned to stick out his left foot, flicked the ball over his head and saw it arc over the leap of Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, off the woodwork and into the net.

"It was an unbelievable finish," said former Arsenal defender Martin Keown on BBC Radio 5 live. "It has to be up there with the goal of the season already.

"He's hooked that with a gadget foot - the ball is behind him and he has no right to get his foot to it."

'The best goal I've scored' - what they said

Olivier Giroud told BBC Sport: "It is not difficult to say it is the best one. I was a bit lucky but it was the only thing I could do, the ball was behind me and I tried to hit it with a backheel.

"Maybe Henrikh Mkhitaryan's goal inspired me, it's the only thing you can do in that position. It is nice for me and the team because we start the year with a win."

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey on Sky Sports: "It was a wonder goal - there seems to be a lot going in recently. It's a fantastic strike."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "It was a great counter-attack at great speed, his reflex surprised everybody who knows football and that's what makes the goal great.

"I have been a bit spoiled over the years by the exceptional quality of the players I've had, but it will be remembered as an exceptional goal.

"Olly is very good in front of goal, but I've never seen this kind of goal from him."

Man of the match - Olivier Giroud

Though Arsenal's full-backs were outstanding, it would be churlish not to single out Olivier Giroud, who produced something quite special.
What's next?

Both teams are in action on Tuesday. Arsenal make the trip to Bournemouth (19:45 GMT), while Palace host bottom club Swansea (20:00).
