President Buhari orders investigation into ‘sexual abuse’ of Boko Haram victims’

Buhari orders investigation into sexual abuse in IDP camps
Human Rights Watch on Monday accused Nigerian officials of sexually exploiting women and girls living in camps for victims of Boko Haram in the war-torn northeast. HRW said in July it documented 43 cases of women and girls in seven internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Maiduguri, the epicentre of the seven-year Islamist insurgency, who had been abused by camp leaders, policemen and soldiers.

“It is bad enough that these women and girls are not getting much-needed support for the horrific trauma they suffered at the hands of Boko Haram,” said Mausi Segun, senior Nigeria researcher at HRW. “It is disgraceful and outrageous that people who should protect these women and girls are attacking and abusing them,” she added.

Nigerian President Muhummadu Buhari said in a statement he was “worried and shocked” by the report and directed police to “immediately commence investigations into the issue.” “The welfare of these most vulnerable of Nigerian citizens has been a priority of his government,” presidency spokesman Garba Shehu said, adding that the allegations raised by the HRW “are not being taken lightly.”

Four of the victims told HRW they were drugged and raped, while 37 were coerced into sex through false marriage promises and material and financial assistance. “Many of those coerced into sex said they were abandoned if they became pregnant. They and their children have suffered discrimination, abuse, and stigmatisation from other camp residents,” the global rights body said. HRW spoke to one 17-year-old girl who was raped and made pregnant by a policeman. “One day he demanded to have sex with me,” she said. “I refused but he forced me. It happened just that one time, but soon I realised I was pregnant.

“When I informed him about my condition, he threatened to shoot and kill me if I told anyone else. So I was too afraid to report him.” HRW said irregular supplies of food, clothing, medicine and other essentials in camps were making the women vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. “In some cases, men used their positions of authority and gifts of desperately needed food or other items to have sex with women,” it said.

Boko Haram has devastated northeast Nigeria in its quest to create an Islamist state, killing over 20,000 people and displacing 2.6 million from their homes. Since taking up arms against the Nigerian government in 2009, the jihadists have disrupted trade routes and farms. Now nearly 50,000 children are facing death by starvation if they don’t get food and almost 250,000 more are severely malnourished in Borno state, according to UNICEF.

New email shows DNC boss giving Clinton camp debate question in advance

Donna Brazile is pictured during ABC News coverage of the Democratic Presidential debate
Another leaked email has emerged showing Democratic National Committee boss and former CNN contributor Donna Brazile sharing a debate question in advance with the Hillary Clinton campaign -- despite Brazile's persistent claims to the contrary.

CNN announced in a statement soon after the email became public Monday that Brazile had tendered her resignation and the network accepted it on Oct. 14, days after the controversy over Brazile tipping off the Clinton campaign initially broke.

According to documents released Monday by WikiLeaks, Brazile sent Clinton Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri an email titled, “One of the questions directed to HRC tomorrow is from a woman with a rash,” the night before the March 6 CNN primary debate in Flint, Mich.

“Her family has lead poison and she will ask what, if anything, will Hillary do as president to help the ppl of Flint,” Brazile wrote.

The following night, Lee-Anne Walters, a mom whose twin boys stopped growing and whose daughter lost her hair during the Flint water contamination crisis, posed a question to both Clinton, the eventual Democratic presidential nominee, and her primary opponent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“After my family, the city of Flint and the children in D.C. were poisoned by lead, will you make a personal promise to me right now that, as president, in your first 100 days in office, you will make it a requirement that all public water systems must remove all lead service lines throughout the entire United States, and notification made to the — the citizens that have said service lines?” Walters asked.

Clinton responded with a lengthy answer that moderator Anderson Cooper had to twice interrupt in an attempt to keep to the agreed-upon time limit. Clinton’s remarks drew applause from the crowd, though she wound up ultimately losing the state’s primary to Sanders two days later.

The apparent email tip-off was included in the latest trove of messages hacked from Clinton Campaign Chairman John Podesta’s Gmail account and posted by WikiLeaks.

Brazile had been under fire over an earlier email chain appearing to show her tipping off the campaign before a town hall event later that same month. That exchange began with Brazile sending Palmieri the text of a question about the death penalty in an email with the subject line: “From time to time I get the questions in advance.”

After Palmieri responded, Brazile wrote back: “I’ll send a few more.”

Roland Martin asked the death penalty question verbatim the next night during a CNN town hall.

Brazile's role as a CNN contributor was suspended when she took over as interim DNC head in July, but on Oct. 14, in light of the email revelations, CNN said it accepted her full resignation.

"We are completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor," the network said Monday in a statement.

Brazile on Monday tweeted a "thank you" to CNN and in a second tweet told the media to refer to an Oct. 11 statement she gave to Politico about the controversy.

“As a longtime political activist with deep ties to our party, I supported all of our candidates for president," Brazile's statement said. "I often shared my thoughts with each and every campaign, and any suggestions that indicate otherwise are simply untrue. As it pertains to the CNN Debates, I never had access to questions and would never have shared them with the candidates if I did."

Brazile, in an interview with Fox News Channel’s Megyn Kelly on Oct. 19, again denied aiding Clinton during the primaries.

“Well, Kelly, since I play straight up and I play straight up with you, I did not receive any questions from CNN,” she said.

When Kelly pressed, Brazile said she was being persecuted and questioned the credibility of the hacked files.

“As a Christian woman, I understand persecution, but I will not sit here and be persecuted,” Brazile said. “Your information is totally false.”

Mosul battle: Iraqi forces near city's eastern outskirts

As Iraqi forces move closer to Mosul, so resistance grows
Iraqi special forces are now less than 1.5km from the eastern outskirts of Mosul and are preparing to enter the city held by Islamic State fighters.

Hundreds of Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) troops entered Bazwaya, the last village before the city limits, after launching a dawn assault on Monday.

A BBC correspondent travelling with them says there was some resistance, with car bombs targeting the convoy.

Units of the army's ninth division are meanwhile advancing from the south.

Earlier, the military announced the start of an operation to retake the side of Mosul east of the River Tigris, which flows through the city.

One senior CTS officer said they aimed to enter the city limits later on Monday (AFP)
Hundreds of troops in heavily-armoured Humvees, together with tanks and bulldozers, advanced on the village, supported by US-led coalition air strikes, our correspondent adds.

Within hours the head of the Iraqi military's Nineveh Operations Command, Lt-Gen Abdul Amir Yarallah, announced that they had entered Bazwaya and raised the Iraqi flag.

The military's command denied that troops were already fighting in the Karama district (Reuters)
Our correspondent says that a column of troops is now probing different parts of Mosul's outskirts, as commanders make a plan about where to go next.

One senior officer told the Associated Press news agency that they aimed to enter the city limits later on Monday, while another told Reuters they were already fighting in the Karama district.

CTS commander Lt Gen Abdul Wahhab al-Saidi denied that the troops had entered Karama. But he did say that they were moving on Kukjali, an industrial zone west of Bazwaya that lies about 1km from Mosul's municipal boundary.

It had been expected the CTS would halt its advance until troops and allied fighters on other frontlines also reached the outskirts of Mosul.

Gen Yarallah announced earlier that the army's ninth division had taken control of the village of Ellag, 17km (10 miles) south of Mosul.

Army units also recaptured a number of villages to the south-east and north, the military said, while federal police are moving north from the town of Shura towards Hamam al-Alil.

About 50,000 Iraqi security forces personnel, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, Sunni Arab tribesmen and Shia militiamen are involved in the two-week-old offensive to drive IS militants out of their last major urban stronghold in the country.

Mosul fell to the jihadists in June 2014 and their leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, chose a mosque in the city as a place to proclaim the establishment of a "caliphate".

Before the offensive began on 17 October, there were believed to be between 3,000 and 5,000 militants remaining in Mosul, along with up to 1.5 million civilians.

More than 17,700 residents have fled so far and, according to the UN's worst-case scenario, as many as 700,000 others could follow suit.

Texas New Black Panther Party Leader: Blacks ‘Are Being Pimped Like Prostitutes’ by Democrats

HOUSTON, Texas – The leader of Houston’s New Black Panther Party said blacks “are being pimped like prostitutes” by Democrats and should listen to the message from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Trump reached out to members of the black community last week during a speech following riots in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Houston’s New Black Panther Party leader Quanell X addressed Trumps Milwaukee speech on a Fox 26 Faceoff with conservative radio talk show host Matt Patrick. “Let me say this to the brothers and sisters who listened and watched that speech,” he said. “We may not like the vessel that said what he said, but I ask us to truly examine what he said.”

“It is a fact, that for 54 years we have been voting for the Democratic Party like no other race in America,” Quannel continued. “They have not given us the same loyalty and love that we have given them. We, as black people, have to re-examine the relationship where we are being pimped like prostitutes and they’re the big pimps – pimping us politically, promising us everything, and we get nothing in return.”

During Trump’s Milwaukee speech, the GOP nominee laid the blame for problems in America’s inner cities squarely at the feet of Democrats and specifically to Hillary Clinton, Breitbart News’ Warner Todd Huston reported. “To every voter in Milwaukee, to every voter living in the inner city or every forgotten stretch of our society, I’m running to offer you a much better future, a much better job,” Trump said.

The messages appears to have hit home with Quanell X and some other black activists across the country. “We’ve gotta step back now, as black people, and say that we’ve gotta look at all the parties and vote our best interest,” the Houston New Black Panther Party leader said.

His sparring partner, Matt Patrick, agreed and said that the mainstream news media has been painting Trump as “a horrific individual and he can’t do anything right.” He said they are nervous that Trump might come in and do things the right way. “Things that come out of his mouth, and the way he says things sometimes, I shake my head.”

Quannel responded saying, “He (Trump) spoke directly to black people, and I want to say, and encourage the brothers and sisters, Barrack Obama, our president, served two terms. The first black president ever. But, did our condition get better? Did financially, politically, academically with education in our community, did things get better?”

He continued illustrating his point asking, “Are our young people working more than what it was when he came into office? Their condition got worse.”

“So now,” he surmised, “We’ve got to do what the honorable Eliah Muhammad said, ‘No politician can save the black community.’ We’ve gotta do it ourselves.”

“Only a fool fights in a burning house,” Quanell X said. “This house is on fire.”

Patrick responded, “Remember that if you’re planning on voting for Hillary Clinton.

Other black leaders have joined in speaking out about the Democratic Party’s taking the black electorate for granted. Speaking at the Green Party’s presidential nominating convention in Houston earlier this month, a Philadelphia-based black community leader, a former Democrat activists, spoke to blacks who were looking to find another party to support. “Are you going to try to go inside there and reform this [Democratic] Party, that has demonstrated in every way, with every opportunity, that they really do not give a flying f**k about what it is you care about?” YahNé Ndgo said. “And for me, that’s not a hard decision.”

“We saw what happened through the whole primary process,” Ndgo continued. “We saw what the Democratic Party did to the incredible candidacy that Bernie Sanders brought to the table and we saw what the Democratic Party did to the voters who selected Bernie, and who they blocked, and who they put someone else in that position who was not the person that the majority of the people selected, and who have experiencing no consequences to that reality. Right?”

“And you live in a Democratic city, and you are supposed to be believing in the Democrats that run your city. How’s that supposed to happen?” she asked.

Radio host Matt Patrick told Breitbart Texas in an interview on Friday he has been talking with Quanell X about the treatment of the black community by the Democrat party for over a year, encouraging him to say this publicly. “I really don’t think he is BS-ing us on this,” Patrick said. “I don’t think he would.”

Patrick said he hopes members of the black community will listen to Quanell’s message about the last eight years of Obama’s administration and the last 50 plus years of the Democratic Party’s control of major cities where race related crime runs rampant.

Email scandal proves Hillary learned wrong lessons from Nixon and Watergate

This Halloween is the haunting of Hillary, where her final political act could well be a ghostly spectre of her first political act, which happened some 40 years ago. She was just a year out of Yale Law School, when she went to work for House Judiciary Committee.

Her job? Investigating President Nixon’s involvement in the break in of Democratic National Committee Watergate headquarters just before his 1972 landslide reelection, and the cover-up that followed.

I was a young West Wing research assistant working on Henry Kissinger’s National Security Council Staff. Hillary was a young lawyer working on the Watergate Committee. The Watergate Scandal and Nixon’s resignation was a political earthquake, and had a formative influence on many of our generation.

The comparisons of Secretary Clinton’s email scandal are eerily similar to Nixon’s Watergate scandal. The evidence against Hillary is contained in her emails with aides. The evidence against Nixon was contained in tapes of his Oval Office meetings with aides.

The very fact that Hillary had a private email server was discovered almost by accident, in an unrelated investigation into the Benghazi scandal. Similarly, Nixon’s private taping system in the Oval Office was discovered almost by accident, in unrelated investigation into the Watergate break-in.

The FBI has reopened its case against Hillary because they found new evidence while pursuing a separate investigation into the creepy sexual exploits of Anthony Weiner, husband of Hillary’s closest aide. The evidence of Nixon’s relationship to Watergate came from investigations into his staff’s involvement in the cover up. Read More...

As Clinton struggles, Trump tries to raise doubts

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is fighting to raise doubts about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as she struggles to get past a new firestorm over her emails that have posed a sudden danger with eight days to go until Election Day.

The announcement by FBI Director James Comey that his agency is investigating more emails as part of a probe into Clinton's use of a private email server has upended the presidential race and given new hope to Trump that he can make an improbable comeback and win on Nov. 8.

"When we win on Nov. 8 we are going to Washington D.C. and we are going drain the swamp," Trump said on Sunday night at a rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico, charging that Clinton represents a corrupt political system.

"Hillary Clinton is not the victim. You, the American people are the victims of this corrupt system," he said.

Clinton's controversy became more problematic on Sunday when a source familiar with the matter said the FBI has secured a warrant to examine newly discovered emails related to Clinton's private server.

The Clinton campaign and its many influential supporters in the Democratic Party have all but declared war on Comey, who was appointed FBI director by Democratic President Barack Obama in 2013.

U.S. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader in the Senate, accused Comey of "a disturbing double standard for the treatment of sensitive information, with what appears to be a clear intent to aid one political party over another."

Clinton's problems have taken the focus away from Trump's own troubles. He has battled to rebound from release of a 2005 videotape in which he boasted about groping women.

Trump had already narrowed Clinton's lead in national opinion polls and is leading in some battleground states where the election is likely to be decided.

Daily tracking polls should reflect soon whether the new controversy is having an impact on the race. Millions of Americans have already voted.

Sources close to the FBI investigation have said the latest emails were discovered as part of a separate probe of former Democratic U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, who is Clinton's closest aide and confidante.

Weiner is the target of an FBI investigation into illicit text messages he is alleged to have sent to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina.

The Wall Street Journal reported that federal agents are preparing to spend weeks examining about 650,000 emails contained on Weiner's laptop to see how many relate to a prior probe of Clinton's email use. If Clinton wins the election, the controversy could cast a cloud over her White House transition.

Trump said the email cache could represent a "motherlode" of emails including the 33,000 Clinton has acknowledged deleting after deeming them of a personal nature. Trump has tried to raise dark suspicions about these emails.

"We never thought we were going to say thank you to Anthony Weiner," Trump, long a critic of Weiner, said in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Democratic leaders are furious at Comey for injecting the issue into the waning days of the campaign after he declared in July that while Clinton had been "extremely careless" in handling classified emails while she secretary of state, that he would not charge her with a crime.

Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and campaign manager Robby Mook questioned Comey's decision to send a letter notifying Congress of the email review before he even knew whether they were significant or relevant.

Comey's letter was "long on innuendo, short on facts," Podesta said on CNN's "State of the Union" program, and accused the FBI chief of breaking precedent by disclosing aspects of an investigation so close to the election.

"We are calling on Mr. Comey to come forward and explain what’s at issue here," Podesta said, adding the significance of the emails was unclear.

"He might have taken the first step of actually having looked at them before he did this in the middle of a presidential campaign, so close to the voting," Podesta said.

Comey's letter was sent over the objections of Justice Department officials. But those officials did not try to stop the FBI from getting the warrant, a source familiar with the decision said, because they are interested in the FBI moving quickly on the probe.

Everton 2 - 0 West Ham Match Highlight (Lukaku and Ross Barkley goals get Toffees back to winning ways) #EVEWHU

Lukaku becomes the third Everton player to score 50 Premier League goals
Everton ended a sequence of five matches without a win with a scrappy victory against a West Ham side who remain close to the relegation zone.

Romelu Lukaku put Everton ahead, heading home from close range for his seventh Premier League goal against the Hammers.
EPL Table As It Stands
Everton improved as the match progressed and Ross Barkley, under scrutiny this season for some inconsistent performances, capped a fine display with a half-volley that secured the points for the hosts.

West Ham, who had been unbeaten in October, had chances and were the better side in the first half but were left to rue Angelo Ogbonna's miss, which could have given the visitors the lead.

Despite their recent revival - the Hammers were aiming for a third consecutive league victory - Slaven Bilic's men remain just three points above the relegation places as they continue to pay the price for four straight losses at the start of the season.

Match Highlight
What the managers said

Everton boss Ronald Koeman: "It's a good win - a deserved win.

"We played well in the second half. Maybe the first half was not what we expect if we play at home. Maybe because of the last few results we didn't have belief and confidence, and that was the difference between the first and second half."

Koeman on Barkley: "That's how he needs to play. He worked very hard, he was running, and that's what you need to do. He had some shots on target, scored the second goal, and that's what we want to see from midfield."

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: "While you are always not happy after a defeat, I am more disappointed because we could have taken something from this game.

"I'm not saying that they didn't deserve it, because they were more mature, but we should have done better.

"They were more lethal and more cruel when they were offered something from us. We didn't capitalise on our chances."

What next?

Everton, sixth in the table, will play Chelsea in the league on 5 November, while West Ham host fellow strugglers Stoke on the same day.

Southampton 0-2 Chelsea Match Highlight (Chelsea keep pace at top with win at Southampton)

Diego Costa's goal against Southampton was his ninth in his past 11 Premier League games
Chelsea kept pace with the leading pack in the Premier League as they moved into fourth place with an impressive win at Southampton.

The Blues took the lead when Eden Hazard capitalised on poor marking before cutting inside Steven Davis and powering a shot through the legs of keeper Fraser Forster.
EPL Table As It Stands
Southampton had plenty of the ball but could not find a way through a well-drilled Chelsea, who looked the more threatening and went close when strikes from Hazard and Diego Costa were saved.

Costa, however, beat Forster at full stretch with a wonderful curled effort from 22 yards.

Victory was Chelsea's fourth in a row in the league - a feat they last achieved in April 2015 - and put them one point behind Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Hazard getting back to his best

Eden Hazard was the 2014-15 Premier League player of the season during a campaign in which former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said the Belgian had outperformed Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Eden Hazard scored and assisted in the same Premier League game for the first time since April 2015 against Stoke
Hazard struggled to maintain those heights as he struggled last season - managing just four goals and rarely showing the pace and trickery that had made him such a threat.

This season is a different story. He has already scored five goals and looks like he has regained the confidence to tease and torment defenders.

He showed skill and power with his goal at St Mary's, scoring in three consecutive Premier League games for the first time, then provided the pass from which Costa added Chelsea's second.
Match Highlights
Italian feel about Chelsea

Chelsea were exposed defensively in consecutive league defeats by Liverpool and Arsenal this season but, since then, they have kept four clean sheets and scored 11 goals.

Manager Antonio Conte's move to a formation with three centre-backs is helping his side look more secure at the back and threatening in attack.

The Italian also appears to have implemented the sort of defending for which his country is famous, as an organised Chelsea denied Southampton's players any space in or around the penalty area and closed them down with aggression throughout.

"We've worked hard in training," said Chelsea defender Gary Cahill. "We've worked hard on the shape that the manager has brought and we are getting the rewards.

"It's OK having the shape but it's about having the mentality of the players to go out and dig in and do the business when you need to."

Southampton undone by Chelsea again

Southampton, whose most recent defeat at home in the league came against Chelsea in February, again had little answer to the Blues.

Saints had 55 shots on target this season before the game, but could muster only one on Sunday despite enjoying 55% of possession.

Their sole effort was Dusan Tadic's low effort, which was comfortably palmed wide by keeper Thibaut Courtois.

Southampton's chances were fleeting and, when they did come, striker Charlie Austin put one header wide and another high.

'It's the perfect game' - what they said

Southampton manager Claude Puel: "We played very well in the first half with so many possibilities and good play.

"But it's difficult to play against this team when you concede a goal after a few minutes. They can play their game with a strong defence and counter-attack.

"It was difficult to find solutions. It's a disappointment because we tried to play good football. We can do better."

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte: "We knew today was a test against a strong side in good shape and form. It's important to win games like this - people can increase their confidence and will to work and trust in the work.

"We created many chances. It's the perfect game when strikers score and defenders don't concede. The players deserved this; they work hard in training.

"When you see this type of game and commitment from your players, it's fantastic for a coach."

What's next?

Southampton are at home to Inter Milan for a 20:05 GMT kick-off on Thursday, 3 November before a league game at Hull City at 14:15 on Sunday, 6 November.

Borussia Dortmund 0 - 0 Schalke 04 Match Highlight (Aubameyang struggled to make an impact as both sides failed to find cutting edge).

BORUSSIA DORTMUND have dropped more points in the Bundesliga as they continue to find their domestic form falling further behind leaders Bayern Munich as they go four league games without a win.

The coach racked up his fourth straight Bundesliga clash without victory as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's return failed to inspire the hosts
Bundesliga Table As It Stands
Thomas Tuchel equalled his longest winless streak in the Bundesliga as Borussia Dortmund coach thanks to a 0-0 Revierderby draw against Schalke at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund went into the clash with their arch-rivals having failed to triumph in their past three top-flight outings, a run they have only twice experienced since Tuchel took over at the start of the 2015-16 season.

MATCH HIGHLIGHT

Despite the return of star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who missed the midweek penalty shoot-out victory over Union Berlin in the DFB-Pokal with a calf injury, they were unable to avoid a fourth match without maximum points.

Schalke applied early pressure on Dortmund and stifled their usually positive forward line, the first half ending without the hosts registering a shot on target.

A knee ligament injury ruled Klaas-Jan Huntelaar out for Markus Weinzierl's first Revierderby at the Schalke helm, and wing-back Sead Kolasinac was unable to convert their best chance in the second half.

Dortmund made a late push for a winner but Mario Gotze was denied by Ralf Fahrmann and a brilliant clearance from Kolasinac stopped Christian Pulisic converting at point-blank range, Tuchel's side slipping eight points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich.

Schalke started with high intensity, Max Meyer having a shot blocked by Sokratis Papastathopoulos within three minutes.

The visitors were playing a physical game but referee Felix Brych showed the first yellow cards to Dortmund duo Shinji Kagawa and Julian Weigl.

Franco Di Santo regularly looked to run in behind and stretch the hosts' defence, but it developed into an even match with few goalscoring opportunities.
